69gr. bullet for 22-250???

i wanna shot a heavier bullet to help cut down on the wind drift.. the 55gr bullets im shootin now are blowin all over the place out past 400 yds... can i shoot a 69gr bullet out of a 1 in 12 twist.. the gun is a savage. havent worked up a load yet but will probably load with 4064 or varget.. many say the bullet wont stabalize.. others say if i push it fast enough it will be fine.. what do u think?

Seeing that a 223 needs a 1-9 to shoot the 69s and a 22-250 really ain't that much faster I believe the answer is no. Maybe a 1-10 but I doubt it.
Even shooting them at 100 won't tell you much. Had a 308 that shot 175s great at 100 but terrible at 600. Turns out the barrel was a 13 twist and the 175s were on the ragged edge of stability. So if the 69s shoot at 100, they might not shoot at the longer distances.

A 10 twist might work but I'd rather have a 9 for the 69gr Sierra. An increase in velocity has no where near the effect on rotational spin that a small increase in twist does.

I shot the 22-250 for MANY years while hunting groundhogs. My favorite combination was a 55gr B-Tip with a max charge of Varget. However, I never really thought of the 22-250 as being very capable beyond about 450yds.

Sounds like time for one of the 6mm's to me.

Contact JLK bullets. I am shooting their 52 gr LD bullet, BC.302, out of my 14 twist 22-250 at 3600 fps with groups running around .35 MOA all the way out to 500 yds. I believe they also stock a 60 gr. LD bullet that should work out of a 12 twist. JLK Bullets 479-331-4194

I have a custom 22-250 built on a rem 788 action and the barrel is just a douglas premium with a 1-9" twist. My guess is the 69 grain bullets won't stabalize correctly in your rifle, but on days I can shoot 1 hole groups with 35.9 grains IMR4350 behind 69 grain sierras. And yes, IMR4350. Both sierra and hornady recommend the IMR4350 for their 69 and 68 grain bullets respectively over ANY other powder in the 22-250. Tell you what, it works. using a bullet comparator, seat the bullet .01" off the lands. For different brass you will nead a slightly different charge, so I would work from 35 grains IMR4350 and go to approx. 36.3 grains. .2 grains will make a big difference. If you are going for tight groups, go with the norma brass. I personally use winchester and sort the brass.

I had to edit this message after reading COBrad's response. DEFINITELY try the 60 grain JLK! I think this could very well be your sweat spot. Try RL15 with this bullet.

Have shot 69 SMK in my 250 eight twist with I-4350 for about seven years now. Will try some 80s this year for long range.

I owned rifle using the 220 Swift Ackley improved in a Shilen SS 1 in 12 twist barrel, and despite achieving 3,650 fps with the 69 grain Sierra HPBT, it would not stabilise.

Judging from my experience, and others that I have heard, you 22/250 would not stabilise that bullet with a 1 in 12 twist barrel.

However, I found that the Sierra 69 grain HPBT gave very good accuracy at velocities of 3,800 to 3930 fps out of a 1 in 10 twist barrel in my .224 Clark.

After about 1600 shots, I had my gunsmith set back the barrel to remove the eroded throat, and now as a 22/250 AI, that same barrel is giving excellent accuracy with the 69 grain Sierra at velocities of 3200 - 3430 fps. Brian.

FWIW, I have a couple of friends that shoot great groups with factory Federal Gold, 69 SMK @ 3000 fps, out of 1-10" 24" barrels, AR15 Olympic ultramtch uppers.

Also, in addition to the JLKs, fudge around with burger bullets in the 60 or 62 grain range. I had stated earlier to try the RL15 with these bullet weights and I need to say you should try varget with them also. Buy a new sierra reloading manual if you haven't already. Varget and RL15 are their recommended powders for this weight (63gr bullet) and I like sierra's manual over all the others.

You've obviously never shot an 8 twist barrel with 75/80 grain amax bullets. It's easily a 1000 yard gun. 800 for sure on ground hogs with no troubles. Pretty sure I'd put my 22-250 AI up against any 6mm for ground hogs. Especially with an 8 twist and 80 ELM bullets running 3500 fps. Very explosive and like a laser. BCs are **** good too.
