Finally got my Savage 112BVSS in 6.5X284 up and running this weekend. I bought it 3/13/10 in Va. but due to an impending move to Ga. on 4/01/10 for a new job, I waited to set it up after arriving. I bought some railroad ties last weekend and got them cut and moved in to place for my backstops.
I started load development with the only suitable bullets I had on hand; Sierra 120gn MK. This bullet with 54.0 and 53.5gn of AA3100 and a BR2 primer produces .3's in this rifle at 100yds.
I also had 5 100gn Ballistic Tips that I loaded with 54.5gn of the same powder and used them first, so they produced the first group in this brand new Savage and it measured .327". Nice way to start it off I thought.
Today after running the figures through JBM I came up with 5.3 MOA of come up (300yd zero). The wind was dead at the 500yd target but half way I had a gusting 3/4 value wind of 5-12mph. I had just shot my .243 and .300WinMag at the same distance, so I kinda had a feel for the wind. I dialed in 5.5 MOA up and 1.5 MOA left and let the wind midway die down a little. All three shots felt good and I was pleased when I arrived at the target.

CTC measured 2.4325". This group consisted of the 33rd, 34th and 35th bullet down the barrel! Gotta love them Savages! JohnnyK. :)

did you do anything to the gun after you recieved it? Barrel break in? bedding, etc.

I just got the 300 WM 112 bvss

Thanks angus. I have been torn between the 6.5X284 and the 6.5-06 but ran across this deal and my decision was made.

6.5X300; I cleaned the barrel thoroughly and adjusted the AccuTrigger down as low as I could get it (2lbs). I shot a total of 10 3-shot groups, cleaning after each. Yesterday I fired two shots at 100yds to verify my zero (same hole, 3.5" high) and then went for the 500yd target that you see. The barrel cleans up pretty quick and I'm not seeing alot of copper. I will however, continue the shoot 3 and clean routine until I feel it's right. I also bought Lapua brass and the Redding Neck Sizing Die set.
I have the 112BVSS in .300WinMag too. It is a beast and shoots great. My go to load for this rifle uses the 180gn Ballistic Tip with 75.5gn of RL22 and CCI BR2's. It regularly prints in the .3's at 100yds and velocity averages 3100fps. I've shot 3.5" groups with this load at 550yds.

Oliveralan; "Think this is the same ole' Savage? think again" :) JohnnyK.

Thought I'd give the 500yd target another try today. The wind had died down considerably from what it was Saturday. I gave it 5.2 MOA up and no windage. I guessed the wind for 2-3 mph and held dead center.

Minus the caliber (.264) it measures 2.146". This is bullet(s) 36, 37 and 38. These 120 SMK shoot pretty darn good. Think I'll get some 140/142's or some Bergers and see how she does.
