6.5x284 loads

+1 for Retumbo. I get 3000fps with 143 ELDX out of 26" 1/8 Proof with 57g and never pushed it more than that. No pressure signs, was using Lapua brass in a new new barrel. I'm sure it will speed up just a bit as it gets broken in like proofs usually do.

With help from Greyfox I worked up a load in my 6.5-284 Norma with Rel 26 and the Sierra 130 grain Gamechanger using Lapua brass and sparked by Fed 210 GM primers. Starting at 54 grains I worked my way up in .3gr increments to 57.6 and still didn't see any pressure signs. This is in a Schultz and Larsen rifle with a 26" barrel with bullets 0.030" off the lands.

Rel 26 loads,

Ave ES SD
56.5 gr 2968 11 5.6
56.8 gr 2988 4.45 1.89
57 gr 3016 33 16.6
57.3 gr 3036 4.5 2.58
57.6 gr 3046 18.9 10.07

Due to an upcoming hunting trip I settled on the 56.8 gr load which produced sub .25 MOA groups at 100m and .44 MOA at 400m. I believe there is another higher node heading closer to the 3100 fps mark.

The deer in my avatar was shot with the 56.8 gr load at 300m with a neck shot.

I'm running RL 26 under 156 Bergers in my 6.5-284 Norma. Seeing right at 3000fps with no pressure signs. The load I settled on was 55.1gr RL 26, Lapua brass, Fed210m primers. I'm seated 0.035 of lands.

In my son's 6.5-284, the best thing he's found is Retumbo with 143 ELDX, with a 26 inch Proof carbon barrel he's right at but not quite 3000 ft./s. H1000 won't do quite that fast. He has tried 147 ELDM As well, Retumbo was the best thing he found.

I had too much vertical at 1,000 yds with RE26 and a Sierra 150...
The group in my avatar is 5 rounds at 600 yards measuring 0.968", Shot with 48.48 gr H4350 and Sierra 142's. BUT, that's the best group of my life. Usual groups are sub 2.5"

PS - I should have added that the load is greater than max listed in some books, but I use Lapua brass and it is safe in MY gun.

I'm working on 6.5-284 loads as well, and will be following this post.

Seems like h4831 is a favorite for many, and there is quite a bit of info for loads using this powder.

I have a decent start with Retumbo, but haven't found quite the right load..

I'm hoping someone might chime in with some insight on RL26... I have some that I have not yet been able to load up. Would love to hear some
recommendations!
With 26 Velocity is there accuracy not so much for me 23 did much better 140 Vldh at 2980 fps

Lapua brass, CCI-BR2 primers, 53.5 g of H4831 sc under Swift Scirrocco 130g shoots lights out out to 950 yds have not shot this load any further yet. Using a 24" 1:8 Hawk hill barrel no signs of pressure. you would get more fps out of a 26" bbl. excellent hunting bullet no failures after multible antelope, elk and deer.

I shoot bench rest and hunt with the 6.5x284. Bench rest set up 28" barrel, laupua brass and berger 140 hybrids just touching lands. I've tried RL26, H4831sc and H4350. In my rifle H4350 was the accuracy winner 49.5g gets me 3000 fps and consistently shoots under .5" at 200 yds 5 shots groups. Best vertical out to 1000. Single digit SD and low ES, If you want speed 55g of RL 26 will get you an extra 100fps with no pressure signs in my rifle. 200 yd groups opened up to around .75"
