6.5 x 284

H4831 is the gold standard in the 6.5-284. I run it and RL23 mainly. Retumbo and RL26 will work very well, too, with the 140 Berger.

Do a search for 6.5-284 Norma and you should find a lot of older threads that have a ton of info. I remember one person posting a RL17 load that was used in multiple builds with high velocity and great accuracy.

With the 140 gr bullets, you should end up around 2950-3000 fps. That tends to be the sweet spot for this cartridge.

I have two of their weapons and have ZERO issues with them.
Same here. I have one and my good friends each have one. Both tack drivers.

After this fall season I'm probably going the shelf the 140s and move to the 156's for added wind busting and a little more energy at longer range.

My Son and I have had really good experiences while hunting with rifles chambered in 6.5-284. I'm still using up the last of the discontinued A-Max pills I bought years ago. My recipe with them likely won't be useful for you, but my Son's handload may be.

A friend of mine, who is an accomplished long-range competitor, recommended RL-16 to me as he'd experienced good velocities, temperature insensitivity and low extreme spreads in his 6.5's. I thought it might be too fast in the 6.5-284 but I tried it in my Son's Remage with a 24" X-Caliber 1:7 barrel; and it's worked out well. Of course the age-old warning applies . . . a handload that works just dandy in our rifles might be excessive in yours. Please reduce a few grains and work up cautiously.

Our load is the 147 ELD-M with COAL at 3.212" (jumping .025"+/-) over 51.2 grains RL-16 and Federal GMM primers. He gets 2,965 fps which is warm, but this load is not exhibiting excessive pressure signs in his gun.

Elk and Mule Deer have not been nearly as happy with this load as my Son has been.

Happy hunting to you Sir!

I could not get the velocity to justify the change. The decrease from the 156 to the 140 was a wash. I don't have the chrono numbers on the 6.5-284, but in my 6.5 SAUM it was about a wash. My 27inch 6.5-284 barrel was getting about 2938 FPS with the 140 Berger (it's a slow barrel).

6.5 SAUM 23" barrel
