6.5 Sherman Shortmag Load Data

The 6.5 SS beside a .308 win

I use a lot of H4831 sc in my 6.5 SS, burn rate and case fill % were very well balanced and I got very good accuracy and speed from it but I have not worked with anything lighter than the 140gr Cutting Edge or Berger.

What was your starting point with 4831sc? Using the 150 gr Matrix? Max load? Velocity?

It's finally done. Super excited to shoot me once the new firing pin shows up.

Lookin' great! The stock looks like my SS.
Here is some new load data: I had a chance to go out and try some RL26 this week. Max loads: Norma brass, BR2 primer, 140 Berger Hyb. 62 grains RL26, 3285' with 26" barrel. This load is a little hot, it left a slight extractor mark but still grouped 5 shots under 1/2" moa. 60 grains turned up 3210'.
60 grains behind a 150 Matrix turned up 3185'.
I got a very low ES with the 140 Hyb. load........Rich

I would start at 52 grains and find where you hit pressure. I ran the 140's at 56 grains and it was definitely not top but I was on a node and still running them plenty fast so I stopped and went hunting! I have not had a chance to work with the 150's much in my SS, they all got feed to a 6.5 Sherman.

Rich have you tried the 140 hybrids over RL33? I scored 8# of it & 500 of the hybrids :D. I even picked up some HexBN especially for the 160 Matrix. Working up new loads for a new rifle. Priceless!!

Hear's a pic of my 6.5SS & the specs for those interested.
Savage 11 donor (trued), Accutrigger 2#, Bartlein ss #11 med palma 30.5", Ross Schuler 3 port (32" w/brake), McMillan fiberlight stock(repurposed silhouette stock), Whidden V-Block, PTG bottom metal, AICS 300WSM mags, EGW 20moa base, Weaver med tactical rings, Vortex 4-16x44 dupl.

Nice looking rigs fellas. My 6.5 SS showed up last week but I'm waiting on some powder for fire forming. I got 300 140 grain Bergers and some H1000 and Retumbo laying around to try out.

I have not tried the hyb. with it but I cranked out a 140 A-max at 3300 with a case full and I suspect the berger would do a little better. That is with a 26" barrel. With the tubes you guys have...."Smokin":D

That is smokin fast! I would love to see the hybrid tested with RL33. Even more curious what the 130 Berger would reveal in itself. ****, if only RL33 was available up in Canada!!

With my 6.5 Sherman, I got more speed with N570 than R33. My Nosler brass is quite heavy and I cannot get enough R33 into the case. 64 gr of N570 with a 140 Berger was going 3329 fps. This was a touch on the hot side so I have dropped it down to 63 gr.

You couldn't put enough behind the 130 to build sufficient pressure to get to max. It is difficult to get enough behind the 140's to do it. I reached 3300 with a very compressed load and it still was not an excessive load.
The guys on your side of the line want RL33 and I want N570. Ain't it the truth, we are never happy:D:D.......Rich

Well I am disappointed with the Matrix bullets.
After nearly a 100 rounds with the 150's and the same amount with the 142's I can't get consistent accuracy with them.
I tried 3 different powders in varying amounts and seating depths. Checked all brass for excessive runout and neck tension. Bumped the shoulder on the case to give a snug fit in the chamber but not overly tight. Checked the loaded rounds for concentricity. Thought at one point the 150's would be the ones but they failed me.
The groups were never consistent. Going from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch with the best powder, amount and bullet seating depth. FRUSTRATING!!!!
So now I move on to the Berger 140 vld's and start the process over again.
Too bad those 150's didn't work. I sure liked the SD on them.
