What would the benefits be of the .170” freebore reamer? Just making sure you had mag room? Conversely, what would be the benefit of having more freebore than needed? For example if the eld x likes to jump anywhere from say .025-.060 off, what would the benefit be of having an additional .030-.065” freebore, especially if you factor in throat erosion?

not sure if you have already gone ahead with choosing a reamer but i run a ptg match reamer with .188 FB and my 143 ELDX loaded .020" off the lands measure 2.865"
These measurements are in a rifle with around 650 rounds through the barrel.

Thanks for the reply Sam. I went with a .170” freebore reamer. The rifle has been built and should be in my hands by Wednesday. Straightjacket Armory out of Evanston, WY built the rifle for me. First time I have ever used them. Very quick 6 week turn around on the full build. Rifle specs are:

Stiller tac 30 action (left hand)
Triggertech special
Mesa Precision Arms M5 DBM
Manners MCS-T
Proof Research 8T @ 26 threaded 5/8-24

That should be a fine rifle indeed, i have a Defiance Deviant with a 24" barrel + muzzle brake in a Manners T4A and it amazing to shoot.

I’d like to hear how yours shoots the eldx. I just built a similar rig. Lefty tac 30 with 22”proof. It has .179 fb and loading 130 accubonds I was getting early pressure in a stiff bolt lift and flat primers. So I got some factory 143 eldx to try and had same result. It shoots vldh great And a little less pressure but still there. I’m considering going to .199 to help get more space in brass. I plan on shooting 130 accubonds if I can get them to play nice.

Will do! I should get to pick the rifle up this week but probably won’t get to mount scope and start barrel break in until midweek next week...hopefully. My wife has a baby shower for our first baby this weekend and I have been assigned many exciting duties...Ha!

Quick update. I picked up the rifle today (chambered with .170 freebore reamer). I don’t have scope mounted but was interested to see if I would see any pressure signs with the load I was using on my other Creedmoor (143 gr eld x, 41.2 gr H4350, 2.810 OAL, 2.166 CBTO, BR2 primer, hornady brass). This load was on the upper end for my other creed and showed very slight primer cratering. I shot 3 rounds in the new rifle and primers looked perfect with no other pressure signs evident.

Finally got to mount the scope, break in barrel and shoot a few groups. No copper after 9 shoot and cleans. I then shot some three shot groups, cleaning in between so there is a clean cold bore shot in each of the groups. Attached pics are from first 3 groups out of the rifle. I used ammo that I had loaded for a creed that I recently sold. This load has shot sub 1/2 minute in every creed that I have tried it in and this rifle was no different with 3 shot groups around 1/4 moa. I haven’t run it across the magnetospeed yet but will soon.

The load is:
-143 eldx
-41.2 gr H4350
-CCI-BR2 primer
-2.810 COAL
-2.166 CBTO
-Hornady Brass (5x fired in savage 12 LRP)

From the day I talked to him about the build to the time it was delivered to my ffl was right at 6 weeks. Communication was excellent and the build quality speaks for itself.
