Hello all. I currently use a 127 LRX for my 6.5- 300 Weatherby. I'm looking to slow down the bullet a little and perhaps save my barrel from further abuse. I'm thinking of try 156 Berger. I hear good things. anybody out there have any reloading information for that cartridge?

It would be interesting to KNOW if a heavier, slower bullet actually results in reduced throat erosion. I have read that heavier bullets maintain heat longer in the throat and have longer barrel time, thus, increasing throat erosion. But ... that was the opinion of the writer and I have no idea if that's accurate or not.

Interesting point thanks

I contacted Berger at their listed contact number on their website and talked to one of the guys that does the bullet testing for them, I don't remember his name at this moment. He was very helpful and went through a list of bullet weights and tested powders with me for three different calibers and one of them was the 156gr bullet in the 6.5X300. I have all of that information wrote down in a reloading notebook however I am working in another state and do not have access to it at this moment. If you give them a call they will point you in the right direction.

Berger has data with retumbo, us869, rl33, n570
If you already have powder someone could rub a quickloads for you if you have a coal with the 156

QL data attached for US869, H1000 and IMR 8133. Proceed at your own risk and, as always, start low.

I'm using a 140 grain Accubond and N570 in my 6.5-300. I am getting great accuracy with .5 to .75 inch groups consistently and a velocity of 3490 FPS. It took me about 50 rounds to arrive at the load and for final sight in, so now I am saving the barrel for actual hunting. 30 years ago my .264 Win Mag was toast after only about 400 rounds so I handling this barrel with kit gloves

Throat erosion and fire cracking are from heat and pressure. Then friction.

Plenty of all of those in a 6.5-.300Wby.

You don't buy a 6.5-.300Wby to save the barrel. You buy them to hot rod a bullet. So don't worry about barrel life. Find a load, then put it in a safe until hunting season.
