Hello
You see a lot about the 6.5-284. Then you see writing about 6.5-284 norma, then the 6.5-284 Winchester. What would be the difference between the three? Do they all shoot the same shell? What is the strong and weak points of this cartridge?
Thank You Fuzzy

6.5x284 is just a generic reference.

6.5x284 Winchester was the original wildcat.

Norma standardized the cartridge with CIP as the 6.5x284 Norma (the european equivalent of SAMMI).

All new factory rifles and ammo are likely chambered for the 6.5x284 Norma unless otherwise stated.

The Norma has a slighlty longer COAL and slightly fatter base.

As such, 6.5x284 Norma ammo may not fit in a chamber cut with an old 6.5x284 Winchester reamer.

There can also be some confusion when ordering reamers as some will be refered to as "Match" or "Lapua". For the most part, these will usually be 6.5x284 Norma with tight tolerance chambers. If you're ordering a reamer, you would want to get the specifics from the reamer mfg.

Strengths:
- very tolerable recoil
- very good accuracy
- excellent Lapua brass (6.5x284 Norma)
- excellent selection of high BC, long range bullets for hunting and targets

Weaknesses:
- shorter barrel life than similar cartridges
- limited availabilty of factory ammo
- limited availability of factory rifles

the only thing I can see to add is that a 6.5x284 win unless a custom reamer is used this version has a shorter throat (less freebore) than the saami (cip) spec 6.5x284norma. The norma standard is meant for a long action because handloads can exceed 3.150" coal.
