6.5-284 vs. 264 Win Mag

I also don't reload yet this will be the first gun i will be reloading for if not then maybe i will start reloading for 243 first.

So if 264 is finicky i don't think i want it. I would kinda like to keep the magnum bolt face though. but i want something easy and cheap to reload for. I don't know to much about it yet.

My 260 with a 28" barrel gets 3000fps with the 140VLD with 44 grains of RL17.
Not trying to revive a 9 year old thread BUT 3000 fps from a .260 w/140s with any length barrel or powder is something I'd love to witness on a calibrated chrono. Maybe an Ackley improved. Tough to get a .260 to 2900 let alone 3000. Even in a 30" barrel

If his chamber is throated correctly for 140gr bullets so that the bearing surface starts at the neck, maybe.
I've also heard good things about RL17... Alliant powders always out perform single based powders in my experience.

I believe 3000 fps is achievable with a 28in. My 26in 6.5 cm can do it with the right powder. 2900 would be pretty easy with a 28in.
What combination will the Creedmoor make 3000 fps with 140s ? Please tell. I've owned one for a couple years and tried all powders that could possibly make it. Hasn't happened yet. It's throated for 147s and RE17,23,26 or Retumbo or H1000 won't come close. IMRs either. I'd like to know the secret. 2900 I've achieved in the Creedmoor. My barrel is 28"

Believing and Achieving are totally separate. BTW, same with my 260s. Never made 3000. Not saying it's possible but show me the money !!!

Hornady brass. 49 grains of rl-26. 3014 fps. 140 eld. That was halfway up the neck. Ended up settling on a load with 48 grains that gave me 2945 fps drop confirmed at 1,000. I'm not the only one there is a while thread on it here. What brass are you using? I lose velocity with peterson or adg brass over hornady due to lesser capacity. Right now my new favorite load is 40.5 grains of rl-16 under a 140 in Peterson or ADG brass at about 2850. 40.8 gave me 2862 with a sd of 4 but I was seeing a every so slight hint of an ejector mark so I backed off .3 and its shooting great just havent chronoed it again.

Are those chronographed velocities ? Or drop data velocities from a chart. I use Hornady brass and several different powders with a 28" Broughton barrel. Tim's barrels are the fastest I've ever shot. Still no 3000. Course don't believe I've ever taken a charge of powder into the actual neck on brass. My concern would be that if the powder is that far up the brass, the bullet is way into the rifling causing too much pressure. Again, this is only my experience.

Chronoed and drop confirmed. It was an optical chronograph I was using at the time, but my drops lined up. I used a magnetospeed now. It was a fairly heavily compressed load. It didnt show signs of pressure though.

For a long time I shot a Win 70 fitted with a shilen barrel in 264 win mag and loved it. Then I started shooting a friends 6.5-284 and am a believer in it now. The 6.5-284 seems to recoil less and better brass is available. So for what it's worth I would now go with the 6.5-284 if I had to do it over again. My 2 cents

That's without a doubt the nicest of the 6.5s IMO. Low recoil and unbelievably accurate. 3100+ is easy with 140+ weight bullets without loading hot. Seems like recoil is less than my .260. Hard to beat

I hear RL26 48-49 grain HOT load use caution. 2900-3000 w 28" barrel. 143/147. Ive not personally done yet.

Although length might be limited, a Tikka Superlite in 6.5cm rechambered to 6.5x284 would make a great packing rifle with range. I recently purchased one in 6.5cm and will be having it transformed by spring. I already have a Savage 6.5x284 so I have the brass and dies already.

Since it has been revived, to answer the OP's question, .264 WM.

My budget build (https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/my-budget-264-wm.238814/), Savage 111 LA, 20 MOA rail, 26" 1:7" 5R Sendero contour X-caliber barrel with MBM beast brake, Choate stock, Leupold LRP 6.5-20 FFP. It was built to propel 156 Berger but have not done load development yet.
