Hey guys I currently have a 6.5-284 with a 29" krieger barrel. I'm shooting the 140gr hornady SST I'm getting 2750fps using 48.5 of H4831sc I would like to increase my velocity to around 2900-2950. If I went to a higher BC bullet like a SMK OR berger VLD would I expect to see much change with the same load? Or do I stick with the SST and increase power?
Maybe a different powder?
Thanks for the input

I think you will be fine to increase powder charges for more velocity. 53 grains of H4831 generally gets me to that 2950ish mark. H1000 or Retumbo are also great powder choices and tend to provide maximum velocities. Start low and work up.

I have a 28" Brux, shoot a 140 Berger VLD Hunting, 49gr H4350, Lapua Brass, Fed210M Primers, and have been consistent at 1000, 1250, and 1425, using 3040 FPS.

4831 is a good choice but you are close to minimum levels. I was using, like others, 53 grains with Berger target vlds. They had a short bearing surface and higher velocity than then the hunting vld. Keep that in mind when looking at different bullets and the intended useage.

Retumbo and 1000 do produce higher velocities and with the longer barrel you will be utilizing the characteristics of the powder better. My current barrel is 28.5". I shoot a light load of Retumbo at 56.6 grains with a 215m and see 3070. With 56.5 and a 210 I see 3045.

If you choose to stick with 4831 you should easily see 2900 and like close to 2950. Good luck.

Is there going to be that much difference between the VLD hunting bullet and the target bullet due to the bearing surface. Has anyone ever put this to test to see what the difference is? Thanks

Your load is pretty light for 4831sc. With your barrel, you should be able to get in the 2950 FPS range. Seating depth with 140 Berger VLD's, Hornady's, or 142SMK 's should be seated .010-.1" off the lands. I use the Berger Hunting 140 VLD's at .075" off the lands I would work up from 51gr of H4831sc. 57 gr of Retumbo will give you another 50-100FPS. Both have proven to be accurate loads on this velocity range in the 6.5-284.

I use 57.2 Retumbo with 215M and 140 hunting vld's out of cooper rifle with a 26" barrel for 3037 fps. very accurate load in my rifle. I have to increase the load to 57.6 with a 210M primer to achieve the same accuracy.

Thanks for the feed back everyone. I'm going to work the load up from where I'm at and see what it can do
