6.5/06 140 hybrid loads

jud 96 you are right on--- the 6.5/06 case holds 2 grain less of H2O than the 6.5/284 norma- however the 06 neck is about 1mm longer. but I have both and the 6.5/norma will do the exact sme velocity with about 1.5 grain additional powder... both on long actions. of course.. They will challange the 270 winchester with less powder and Higher B C still the 270 win is a great shooter.

Sokeye66: in the 6.5/284 I have found that IMR 4831 will get some great vel.. I do not like this stuff as IMR should not have called it 4831 because the two are very different.. and dangerous.. H 4831 is like 10 bars slower than Imr 4831. remember the orange can or bottle is almost the same as Imr 4350. the H 4831 or red bottle is very close to Imr 7828 blue bottle.. the new H 4831 is made in Australia and is very good powder the IMR stuff is made in CANADA and it is also very good , but they are very different.. to make thing more confusing Winchester WXR is made in Sweden and is the very same as R 22. remember that is WXR not WMR.

Thanks for that, I've never used IMR 4831 for anything I shoot. H4831 was pretty good for my 6.5x284 but RL23 is better. From what folks say it's temperature insensitive as well. Wanting to rebarrel my A303 soon to 6.5/06 AI.

I would not waste my time going Ai
Strait 6.5x06 neck up 25-06
That would be a good plan as I've already got plenty of 25/06 brass. I would really like to make it a 6.5x284 but not sure if it would feed well. Here's a pic of the A303

sockeye 66 you are right on. anything smaller that a 7mm on a 30/06 case does not need the AI that is from the mouth of ackley himself. and I had to do the dumb thing of trying the AI on a 6.5 and on the06 case just a waste of powder--- now on a 57 mm case it is a good -un. and as the story goes you cannot improve a winchester 270. 30 cal and up the AI is great especially on the 338/06 imp.35 whelen imp is very good .

Sockeye66....That's a beauty!

I have a Mark X action 30-06 with a maple stock like that. My dad built it for his brother back in the late 60's. After he died my dad got it back from his wife to gave it to me. I've never shot it but a 6.5-06 SS barrel would sure look good on it!

I have two 6.5-06 and one 6.5x284...there is a reason I have two of one and not the other! ;)

You bet-- You will love shooting the 6.5/06 and more than likely your Mark X has an adjustable trigger. they are very fine actions.. I have one that is the whitworth and it is slick and the other is the regular and it is strong. I use it for the Big 5 round 416 taylor and it is a jewell. I use 270 winchester cases but you will have to trim them back to 63mm after you resize. or 25/06 brass works just great.. actually I have used 30/06 brass too.

That gun was built by the late Carl Lindholm for his brother Ed who was my uncle. After Ed passed, the rifle was given to me and it will be passed along to my 12 year old. Carl passed recently at 94, WW2 veteran and longtime gunbuilder/gunsmith. Ironically, Carl and Ron Redell (father of Travis Redell at RBros) were friends and we all lived near each other back in the day in the same one horse town.

Wow funny how our rifles have similar stories, mine will be passed down to my 9yo grandson. I need to refinish the stock si I can get a good pic of it.

My dad has said my wood finishing skills are a bit better than his, but I think it's better quality products available now compared to what he had in the late 60's.

This one of my builds...from a tree that grew behind our camp house. It was a giant mesquite tree.

What man doesn't like to have good wood!:cool:;)
