500-800 yd elk rifle

I hunt with a .338 wm 225 gr e-tips at around 2800 fps - from what I have read I dont think that will suffice at 800 yards. Its a 1.5 inch rifle at 100 yrs. I want to get a secondary rifle that will strictly be used at 500-800 yards. It wont be my primary rifle.

I'm debating between savage long range Christianson arms and a browning hells canyon long range. I want to stay under 1400 for the rifle and around 1k for a scope. Cartridges are between 300 rum - 300 win mag - 338 rum. Outside options would include 7mm rum and 338-378 wby in a mark 5. 300 wm is the cheapest but it seems like it may be a marginal upgradd from the 338 I already use.

I've got a Fierce Fury that will do 3/4" or better at 100 yards. 300 Win mag with 200 gr Partitions loaded hot. 800 yards is plenty far for me but I know the rifle is capable.

300 Norma or PRC might fit the bill.

Never underestimate the .300 WM with the right load and NUTS behind the trigger. I harvested an MT bull elk at 931 yards with 190 Berger VLD. Do a quick search on BROZ's amazing real-world experience harvesting 100s of elk with the .300 WM 210/215 Berger and H1000. You are going to have a hard time a more successful account than BROZ's.

Berger 230 and 300 OTM Hybrid terminal results

No real long range stuff from us yet, but I wanted to share what we have taken so far. Ny son has taken 2 antelope, one at 738 yards and one at 595 yards. He is shooting the 230 gr Berger OTM Hybrids from his 300 win mag with a MV of 2772 fps. Wind drift is the best we have seen in a 300 win...

PRC will get you a tick more velo than the wm and the 212 ELD-x and 230ELD-m will shoot great out of it... that being said all the calibers listed, with the right load are more than sufficient for killing elk at 800 yrds.

I have a savage 110 tactical in 300 win mag that shoots .5 moa with handloads. It uses the cip length mags so plenty of room to seat bullets wherever you like. Also comes with a 20moa rail and oversized bolt handle. Hard to beat for the price.

The 300 win mag has been doing it for decades! With Easy to obtain components - its not picky on powder - mild recoil with a good muzzle brake.
What's not to love?!

Given the current state of affairs I would consider a cartridge that will be relatively easy to find components for-with that being said - 300 win mag is a solid choice.

I agree with 300 WM crowd, but this rifle isn't offered in that.

I like 28 Nos for what you are wanting to do.

375 RUM: buy a long Shilen barrel with muzzle brake (High twist for the long bullets loaded single shot) for a Savage 110 or Mausingfield action, screw it in and set the headspace. Lots of kill power WAY out there. Get into changing barrels. With a good vise, two blocks of wood, some resin, barrel nut wrench and a torque wrench, you will be set to make your rifle more versatile.

I am a huge proponent of overbore and pointlessly overpowered rounds.
That being said, 300 win mag is more than enough for 800 yards. To be frank, 338 win mag is probably enough too if you reload and know your drop. But if you just need to have something overkill, I'd go 300 rum.

As big of a fan as I am of the rum though, 300 win mag is perfect for 800 yards elk. I've seen the win mag take elk at 1000-1100 yards. Overbore is fun though but don't underestimate the legendary win mag, and it's ammo and component availability.

The 7 mag was built to kill elk in the mountains. Mine been doing it for 30yrs !

I've been hunting elk with a 300 Weatherby mag for 12 years. The longest shot I've killed an elk is 600 yards. I've shot further than 800 but haven't practiced much at that range and shouldn't have taken the shot. I know the rifle is capable. I shoot 185gr vld hunters with that rifle. I bought a Browning x bolt hells canyon long range in 30 Nosler this year and loaded 210gr vld hunters. I killed my bull at a whopping 75 yards. The hole on the entry side was 30 cal but hit a rib and the hole in the other side was close to a football. The last elk I shot with my 300 wby at that range the elk ran away and I wasn't able to recover it. I was shooting 180 gr nosler partition Spitzer. Wont use that bullet any more. I think the 300 win mag will do what you ask it to if you load it right.
