50 Caliber Scope Mounting

I have a friend that recently purchased a Barrett M80A1 in 50 caliber. it came with a Swarovski scope 6 x 24 x 56 I believe. With the way it is mounted I cannot get it down far enough to sight it in at 300 yards. Is this an unrealistic yardage to obtain. Most people tell me it should be sighted in at 1000 yards but we only have one range anywhere close to even shoot that far. Can anyone give me some advise?
