Does anyone handload a 45/70. I just purchased a Winchester new manufacture hiwall, the one with recoil pad and no sights. It is a hunting gun, primarily withetail deer, may hunt black bear next year.

I load one for a Ruger #1 and your Browning could take the same loads.I use a cast 390gr bullet over 36gr of IMR 4759 for 1950fps. It has a 1.5 x 6 Sightron (sp) and zeroed for 300 yds, it is hell on rocks at that range.Other powders that work well in 45-70's are IMR3031 or Accurate 5744. In the back of Lyman # 47 or #48 there loads for "STRONG" action 45-70's.

My load for my Marlin is the 300 gr Remington HP and 56 gr of IMR 3031. Not a max velocity load (1900 fps) but it will cut bullet holes at 100 yds and whitetails are very impressed by it!
