I've been getting a lot of requests for information regarding the 423 Dakota brass manufactured by Lapua and after searching on the web, I found that there is very minimal info on the stuff with no dedicated thread specifically for the .423 DAKOTA and the wildcats spawned from it...... While there is good info here on this forum, it is spread over multiple threads so I figured we need an informational thread that can be used as a reference for shooters interested in the 423 Dakota brass....
If you have developed/designed a wildcat or built/building a rifle based on the 423 Dakota, please share your info and data here and I will supply my info as my 'cats see completion, have a good number of them off this excellent parent cartridge......
A while back I had posted about the 423 Dakota brass on my group page "Wildcat Cartridges and Custom Rifles" on Facebook but FascistBook had jailed my account and that info vanished along with my other posts, luckily I'd texted my post to myself to proofread and correct grammar before posting on FB, here is that info unaltered with a few pics added........

Most of you have heard about or may have the 423 DAKOTA brass that was manufactured by Lapua , so this may be old news , for those who are curious just what in the heck it is,
Here are some pics of the cases, where this mysterious 423 Dakota fits in and what I'm doing with it ......
I have a game bag full of wildcats (moose quarter size) I'm doing on it and the pics below show a couple ....
I took the dimensions from a handful of cases from my stash and measured with a digital caliper until I got consistent, repeated readings (some of you may have slightly different results) and plugged those dimensions into the Quick Design program to generate the print with dimensions and case h20 capacity prediction . The case rim diameter is pretty much 338 Lapua/338 Norma and so is the case body at the web with case length similar to the 338 Norma Magnum ...... up top Is a more generous case taper at the shoulder over the 338 Norma Mag, one could say it is simply a shortened 338 Lapua Magnum case in .423 caliber .
Basically a very well designed Dangerous Game cartridge .........
Now here is the important part ....
The brass was made by Lapua !! Absolutely excellent brass in every way imaginable, the case head is of superior strength and thickness over the Norma/Nosler/Hornady etc. currently available in 338 Lapua Mag and/or 338 Norma Mag, 300 Norma Mag .....
From the limited info available on the internet and some second hand info that I got about the stuff, Lapua made a batch of the 423 Dakota brass for Dakota, a new cartridge they never fully unveiled for several reasons which I will not go into as I do not have the facts ...... it is now deemed "obsolete" ! If someone here has more valid info, please update !
Grafs picked up most of it and were selling it a heavily discounted price but it sat there for a number of years until a bunch of wildeyed wildcatters found out exactly what it was and scrambled madly buying it all in large quantities and it vanished from Grafs stock , I now regret not buying several thou more of the stuff .....
I may be partly responsible for it's disappearance, having sectioned the brass and validated it's construction of true Lapua quality with chronographed reports of my 375 cal wildcat based on the stuff exceeding 375 RUM velocities and posting the info and pics on the Long Range Hunting forum , then maybe not as by then the true quality was discovered by many, what remains is the fact that Lapua will not be making the 423 Dakota brass ever again and it is not available from any online outlets anymore, the only way to get it is from someone who will part with some at what most likely will be a higher price than originally purchased at, I would not blame them one bit .....
the 423 Dakota case can be easily made into the 338 and 300 Norma Mags including any wildcat based on them ....
this stuff is Gold not Brass !
