i've been trying to order a 338 rum for about a year now and at every turn i keep getting "back ordered" so i'm considering a 338 win in a savage weather warrior, i had a ruger m77 (the older model with the thumb safety on the wrist. sold it miss it) but never considered a 338win a "long range" gun, more of a medium range smasher, if you were to start loading for long range 800-1000 yds where you start in regards to bullet choice and powder? i'm experianced in long range shooting using my rem 700p in 308 but looking for more down range horsepower.

Just curious in 338 RUM what model have you been trying to order for a year now?

I've shot thousands of rounds at long range, out to 1,455 yds. with the 338 winny. I used the 300 MK and the 250 Hornady match with the latest rifle, but I had one that would only shoot 225's. Any 225 would shoot in it, but I often shot flat base to 1,050 on windy days to practice my wind reading. Pretty tricky but effective.
The longest kill I got with one was 510 yds on a spike elk with 250 grain Hornady Interlocks. My spring bear was taken at 465 with a 225 sierra flat base. Both animals dropped DRT.

With proper shoot placement I'd be confident out to 700 yards on elk size game. Others may say more or less, hopefully they will comments on what they think.

out of curiousity what velocity do you achieve with the 300SMK?

hillbilly,
I get 2734fps from the 250gn Hornady BTHP match and 2430 fps from the 300gn SMK.

I have found the 250 Hornady an excellent projectile for the .338WM and prefer it to the 300gn SMK.

In a 24 inch barrel I was getting 2,475 fps., but I was'nt pushing it hard either.
68 gr. RL-22. Where I shoot @ 3500 to 6500 ft. It's good to around 1,700 yards. Out does the 250's. Not sure they would open past 1,200 yds. Real good to 1,500 for rocks. gun)

I shot a moose in Alaska several years ago at 1100 yards with a 338 win mag so it has the range and will do the job. Also took a caribou at around 800 on the same trip. The 225's and 250's will kill stuff at 1000 yards out of the 338 win mag.

LTLR, you probably don't brag about yourself but I give credit where credits is do and brag a little about ya.:) Shoot placement had alot to do with succesful 800 and 1100 yard shots with any caliber and my hat's off to you for having and utilizing exceptional shooting skills.
