It just occurred to me that it's worth mentioning that even though the Max case was designed to run in a 3.1" magazine if you were going to use something like a 250 Berger, most of the spitzer style 338 bullets, that many would likely use, would still run under 3" coal in a std short action. Food for thought if you want to have a short action Hammer for bears, etc with something like a 250 Accubond!
Also Steve (Hammer Bullets) might have, or could design, a lighter mono in the Sledgehammer design that would work?

So you can use 270 adg and neck it up to 338 Sherman max? Sounds like a hot rod. Currently necking up 06 brass to 338 for my 338-06

Let's start from scratch. The Sherman Max case is Saum based and you would create the 338 max from necking up the 7 Max which is a highly modified Saum.
The 338 Sherman is based on a highly modified 270w case on the '06 head size .470"
