I had Kirby Allen build me a .338 Allen Express from a CZ550 Safari Magnum that was originally a .416 Rigby.......it wound up being a very heavy rifle [my choice!] with a Mike Rock MTU contour and a 1-9.3 twist. I'm guessing that it weighs about 17+ lbs.

"IF" you were to pick a more portable rifle, that still launches the 300 gr. Sierra, and wanted to use a Rem 700 action, or a custom "simular" action, which caliber would you choose for out to 1k yards [Elk or Tactical]???

Kirby's 338 Allen Express that he built for me is capable out to 2.5k!!!

I'm just curious, as I am currently working on a 1-8" X-Caliber, 7mm Rem Mag, Remington 700.

Thanks for any comments or opinions given with respect and KNOWLEDGE.

I built myself a 338 rum with Dave Kiffs bore rider throat. 3125 with a 250 accubond out of a 5 weight Schneider 10 twist with Gary,s 5p rifling. The action is defiance CRF rebel. In my mind this is the best but of course everyone has opinions. I am not sure what your intent is with the sierra but I do not like target bullets for hunting. My barrel is 26 inches. What I like about the rum is it will still go in a 700 footprint action and a 1 1/16 barrel tenon will hold it. People put lapua on 1 1/16 actions but not this kid. And the rum actually has more boiler room than the lapua. The edge is more but is it worth it? I guess in some eyes. And a rem 700 is like a small block chevy for parts. If you want it somebody makes it. Now bullets. The accubond will work for long range but in close they go inside out and lose too much. I see hammer has a good selection. This rifle weighs 9 pounds bare with no scope. Not much fun on the bench but when hunting you never feel it. Screw a brake on for tactical or bench. Put it in your pocket for hunting.

This is a tough question for me ..
I have 3 338 Rums and 3 338 Edges .
They are both so close it's a toss up .
I hunted with my Proof Edge and it's amazing ! Put it this way it cost me alot of $$$ at the Taxidermy Shop.
I took my Elk this year at 1244 yrds with the 300 gr berger elite hunters. Just banged steel at 2053 yrds with my heavy Edge. I guess it's time to break out the Rums to find the best set up .
They both shoot the 300 bergers almost the same speed .
I'm going to pick the 338 Edge because the name is Cool !
I'm adding that all 6 run Remington Brass .

I am going with the 338 Sherman Max. I know it may not be in the same league as the others, but being more unique has my attention. I will probably get one of those big boomers at some point......if I don't get to old first!

.338 Norma or Norma improved variant is what I would go for. Since it is a hunting rifle, you can easily run them as a repeater in a 3.850 mag with a 300 Berger and use all of the potential case capacity, not really doable with the Edge, though you can just jump a lot, out of a Wyatts 3.850" mag. I don't know the specifics of the rum with a Sierra 300, it has a little shorter nose than the Berger, so it may be workable out of a rum in a 3.850 mag with optimal seating, I don't know either way.

The standard Norma will get you 2650+ with a 300 pill and optimum powders, even in a 24" barrel (my buddies is 2750 with a mild load out of a 28"), an improved version will get 2850ish or better depending on the variation you go with.

I just finished up putting together my back country elk rig, a 9.1 lb all up .338 Norma mag, handles like a dream, especially compared to the 14 lb pig I was used to carrying all over the back country. Barrel is 24" plus brake, #5 spiral fluted Lilja. My buddies 11.5 lb .338 NM is pretty fun too, just a little heavy for what I wanted to do. it sure does shoot sweet though. Haven't put rounds through this one yet, hopefully soon!!
