338 Lapua reloading with 250 Berger and H1000, question on expected speed.

My 338 Lapua (a Sako) would push 250's to about 2960. This was with Retumbo or RL25. It wasnt much faster than my 340 Wby though, maybe 20 fps. - dan

My lapua loves 2800ish fps.
250s with H1000 and 300s with retumbo.
2840 fps. 26" barrel.
250s are tighter at 1000 but I stuck with the 300s. No pressure signs on either.
300 grain target.

As an aside, I loaded my 338LM to just barely short of Mag length. And went elk hunting. Was fortunate enough to get an animal and when I unloaded the Mag after 1 shot, all of the tips (accubond 300gr) were deformed from the recoil. Also the seating depth was deeper than the recipe. Not sure what that would have done to a follow up shot but it was something I never considered during the load development. When I checked for functionality I simply loaded and ejected out of the mag without firing.

If you are going to retry developing a load, might consider examining if you are experiencing this issue.

Best of luck, and I get about 2850FPS with RL33 and 300 gr AB.

If you don't have any n570, then lrt, magnum, retumbo will get you top velocity for the 300's. rl25, 7828ssc and 869 could be a 2nd choice? Some are more temp stable than 869.

New 28" Barrel, with about 30 rounds. 91.5 of H1000, and I see a light mark around primer. Dropped back to 91.0 of H1000. Looks promising for a group size, but only getting 2850 fps. I have Retumbo. I will try that next weekend.

Been using VVN560 / RL19 & 22, Was not too crazy over Retumbo- am shooting for accuracy and not velocity- just got my gun back from smith with a new 29+ inch bbl was shooting a 26 inch that was shot out. Will stay with my present powders till I get to the range and clock my new bbl.
Good luck with Retumbo !!
