308 win/ good moose bullet

I'm helping a buddy make a load suitable for moose and mule deer for his 308 mil-spec. 11.25 twist.
I recommended the 178 eldx, wants to practice pushing his range farther after hunting season.
Is there any other bullets he should be looking at.
For those who use the 178 eldx is varget the best powder choice? Or h4895 to save on cartridge capacity?

As far as he's able to. Should be good to 350-400 yds with a 178 eldx?

I would think the eldx would be a good choice. The Barnes might be with enough velocity close range. The heaviest Berger the twist rate will stabilize.

Barnes or Accubond/Partition. If he's not going to be shooting long range, Partitions are tough to beat regardless of the cartridge and game being persued.

I used a 30-06 with a 200gr Accubond bullet. It was a mild load, my father did the loading, I have no idea what it was. 217 yards, I got the bullet back on the off shoulder, perfect expansion, dead devil cow at 666 lbs.

That being said, I wouldn't feel outgunned with a 165-168 Accubond traveling 2700+ out of the 308. Find out what your rifle will shoot well and go with it. I like AR Comp, shoots great with 40-41.5gr with Nosler CCs, very low SD's in my bolt gun. 2000MR produces very respectable velocity as well, and the standard Varget/IMR 4064 all work well also.

Berger 180 Elites may be something to look at if the mag box will allow. Shooting them in a 30-06 with confidence.

308 did pretty well but shooting the 215s in that with better results.

Yeah the 180 elites look like they might work well in a 308. It's a 700 so mag length is a little tight

Canhunter35, Pretty hard to beat a Barnes 150 TTSX in the .308 Win. For larger game. If you go any heavier your starting to sacrifice case capacity. memtb

Yeah case capacity is always the struggle past 168 gr bullets. The heavier bullets become mortar like. Lol

Do you think a 150 gr solid copper bullet has the advantage over a 165 gr bonded bullet?

Canhunter, In my opinion yes!!! Though the "bonded" Bullets have "closed the gap" considerably between a conventional cup and core and the mono's. I'm not sure what the typical weight loss is for a "bonded" from 0 yards to around 400 yards, but with the TTSX...it's near zero! The 150 TTSX can be "pushed" pretty fast in the .308 Win., and has a pretty decent BC....for longish shots! Again this is JMO,as we (wife and I) use larger caliber rifles. But, since the early 90's we've had great success with the Barnes'. And they have "only" improved thru the years! Good luck with your decision and the upcoming hunt! memtb

I shoot the Berger 185 HVLD at 2624 in my 308 also. Their nose is a little less than the elites thats why I could do it without single feeding.

May be another option
