308 twist for accuracy.

Building a rifle for a buddy. Wondering what twist rate works best with 308 in 20" barrel?

What platform and what is the heaviest bullet that will be shot?

Knowing the intended bullet weight helps to answer this better, but a 1 in 10 is good 'average' twist rate for 308 win.

I agree. I have a M1A loaded with an air gauged 11. It really likes the old standard 168 sierra but certainly nothing wrong with a 10

I have a 1:10 on a 20". I would not recommend anything slower, especially if looking to shoot monos or heavy for caliber.

I have a 300 RUM with a 1:12 and I have lost all potential to reach out there with heavy pills.

AR 10 platform and bullet weight between 150 to 180 grain. Mainly used for deer hunting,some hog hunting and just fun play. Then all guns are for fun play.lol

My AR 10 is a 10 twist. i mainly shoot the 185 juggernaut. it shoots the Federal Fusion 150's very well also.

I used to shoot 187 gr flat base Bullets at 600 yds with a 12 twist. I think an 11 twist is a better compromise for a field gun, since the 308 doesn't do as well with 200 grainers, but you could still shoot them if you wanted to. 11 is fine. 2cents

I shoot a 10 twist in my auto and my bolt and they both shoot 150 and 175 very well. I think as long as it is a quality barrel it is ok to over spin them.

I have a Ruger Precision Rifle 1 in 10 and a Tikka Tact A1 1 in 11 = Both shoot lights out 168 and 175 SMKs and 165 Gamekings

I shoot a custom 700 with 12 twist it loves 168 and 178 grain bullets. I can group them .6" at 300 yards all day long. But for all around use I prefer 11 twist.
