308 Results Question

I loaded up a few more 308 rounds to test. The results are shown below. As you can see, all loads shot pretty good. To keep things even, I threw out one shot from each load to measure the best 3 shots. The picture shows the stats (avg velocity, SD, ES) based on the best 3 shots.

My main question is how to you view the POI changes. I know this is taken into account in the ocw method, but not sure how I should interpreted the results on poi. It's clear the 43.5 group highs higher than the other groups.. also the 43.7 group is lowest...

Also, the last group didn't have best ES and SD, but It had the best group. The stats were still good but not great. Should I go with best group?

43.7 with 2 5 shot strings, throw none out
foul with 2 shots first
got to explain the one hot.high shot
lots of vertical in the lower loads, well below .5

Thanks... I'll try 43.7 again with 5 shots and also plan to try 43.6, 43.8, and 43.9... it would be nice to see how well the increased loads shoot.

As for the flier, I need to pay more attention to weighing my charge on the chargemaster (trickle final kernel) and this is brand new brass so the neck tension might not be perfect. I did expand each with an expander mandrel then neck size before firing.

I made a suggestion like all people do. If you folks want to start a thread on OCW then fine dont hijack this one.

Thanks for info. I enjoy the shooting and testing...

I haven't done an ocw test but was wondering if these results could be interrupted like ocw. Since Ocw is about POI, you can see that the first overall picture shows all groups and could use that to review the data.

For instance, the 43.3 is low, 43.4 little higher, 43.5 highest, 43.6 low, 43.7 lowest.... if I shoot 43.8 and 43.9 I wonder if the 43.7 will be in the middle of the poi for those groups. I plan to shoot 43.8 and 43.9 to see...

Well OCW usually uses a wider powder movement shot round robin. Read up on it. With your target you have now 43.6 maybe be there but not shooting the test its hard to tell. I have found I shoot a lot less to get great results using the OCW. I hear it doesnt work for everyone I can only speak for myself and Im no internet ninja.

Yeah that is true... I'm new to load development so I don't know all the best methods. So far I have shot a single ladder to find max pressure and velocities per charge. Then I back off 1-2 grains from max and look for flat velocity nodes. After that, i load for groups in .3 to half grain increments... then fine tune with .1 grain groups. These were my results from the .1 grain groups.

I'm read the ocw method and it makes sense. If I can be in the middle of the poi shift and have best groups around 43.6 to 43.7... I'd be happy.

It's just fun to shoot and experiment to me. Thanks for the info

had he shot a posocw he would be broke'r only.
it does not work for anyone with the knowledge on how to shoot a ladder plain and simple. it cost more money and introduces wind. so go away. it is about the second or third step in this guys LADDER.
Had he shot an OCW test he would be done. Sorry it doesn't work for you.

Your best group seems to be the 43.7 Varget. If it were me I would go with that and zero to it. Of course I have my own pet load for the 308. 165gr. Speer B.T.S.P. #2034 - 42gr, IMR 4064 CCI #200 primer. 2500 F.P.S. Up in Northern New Hampshire your lucky if you get a shot over 200 yards in all the dense wood up here. I also only have a 200 yard range I go to. Kind of limited on long shots here.
