I'm getting ready to work up some loads for my savage 11. Should I buy new brass or is the tons of old stuff I have ok? I'm gonna make sure all are the same weight and length.(trim if necessary ). I'm gonna use old reliable IMR 4895 and 3031. It's worked in my other hunting rifles. Any suggestions on different powders.

Varget has worked really well in my Savage 10 "Sierra". I have found it to be one of my least temp sensitive powders. I'm not sure that new brass is called for in a hunting rifle.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

If its been fired in another chamber, I would definitely Full Length size it. I like to Full Length any brass for hunting use (just for feed reliability's sake).

It all depends on what game you will be shooting and what distance you plan on shooting that game. 400 yards and in on deer size game a good 150 gr bullet like the Nosler BT or Sierra SP or Hornady SST and 43 to 44 grs IMR 4895 has accounted for a good deal of deer for me. As of the past few years where I hunt with my 308 Win for deer the shots are not much over 300 yards and most between in your lap out to 200 yards. I have gone to this load. 46 grs IMR 4895, WW case, CCI-Br2, 125 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and it does 3000 fps from my 21 1/2" Heart barrel 700 Rem. IT SMOKES DEER. If you keep the impact velocity under 3000 fps the 125 BT is awesome on deer. I shoot it in my 30x47 rifle at 2850 fps and my T/C Contender 14" barrel pistol in 30-30AI at 2670 fps. Put one in a deers shoulder and it goes BANG FLOP. If your shot will be 300 to 600 yards or so I would go with a good 165 gr bullet or one of the Berger VLDs around that weight. As for brass. If I could not find new cases. If it were I would start with the newest cases I had. Preferable once fired full length sized all the same head stamp trimmed and match prepped by doing the inside flash hole, primer pocket and weight shorted.

IMR 4895 44 grains, 168 amax 2.8 COAL. I don't know the speed on these but at 200yards I'm sub MOA and I using the marlin X7VH. It a 26 inch heavy barrel. Also look at RL17 and CF223. I think the CF223 will give over 2800fps when loaded at max. Always work up from low to a higher charge weight.
