308 Load info

Let me try this again
I was in sportsman warehouse today and this poor Remington sps in 308win looked so unhappy I just had to bring it home
I would like to hear what some of you are shooting out of your 308s
I was planning on the 150 gr nosler BTs in winchester brass
hoping for shots to around 1000 yards on rock chucks ect
and maybee a whitetail to about 500 max
Mostly lots of med-long range rock chuck shooting.
BTW the remington looks much happier in my safe only thing is it brought a new taurus judge with it:D

Id go with 47grs RE15 with the 150NBTs and then go with some 155AMAXs and watch your groups shrink. Shot these 2 5 shot groups @300yds, just look at that dern flyer, that mustve been me for sure. I did try the same load with 150NBTs and the accuracy wasnt there so much.

1000 yards is not an easy task with a .308 assuming this is a 1:12.
It is do able though.

For 1000 Yards, try 175g Sierra Matchkings with Win Brass and Primers.
Start with 42g of Varget and work your way up.

For Deer within 500, 150, 165, or 168 Nosler Accubonds or Ballistic Tips will
do their part.

If its a sporter SPS the twist is 1 in 10", my 308 takeoff barrel from a stainless/synthetic model is. And dont let anyone tell you the 12 twist wont stabilize a heavier 178HPBT bullet, either. It will. The group is from my SPSS 1 in 12 twist.

Hunter
It has a 1 in 12 twist 26 in barrel
1000 yards would be the max for rock chucks and not very often most of the time our shots range from close up to 700ish
Varget would not be a bad powder for me I have two guys that use my relaoding stuff to load 223 with varget I loaded varget in my 223 before I found BLC2
Not my groups are tighter loades are faster and my SD in only9 fps it was 55 with varget

So its the heavy barrel version.

Yes it is the heavy barrel model
I will probably be starting with either the 165gr or 168 gr Nosler balistic tips
then move on from there if I cant get a good load
Was also wanting to try that new powder hodgen has coming out the cfe223
sounds interesting

I load for a friend with your Remington model. His rifle does well with the 175gr SMK's and Winchester brass.

My personal pet load is:

175gr Berger VLD
44.4gr RL-15
CCI-BR2
Lapua brass
2.845"
2595pfs out of a 20" barrel

175gr Berger VLD
44.8gr RL-15
CCI_BR2
Hornady Match brass
2.805"
2595fps out of a 20" barrel

Both loads chronograph at 2595 fps and put 4 shots inside of 1/3" at 100 yards. The actaul measured outside to outside minus bullet diameter is .274" on the pic below.

These loads may be a little hot for longer barrel rifles, mine is a 20" production Ruger Tactical. The Ruger comes with a 1:10 twist, no problems with 175's. The Berger BC is corrected to .493 with my test data. I've shot it out to 800 yards with great success.lgun)

I took two deer this past February with this rifle and load. The exit hole was huge using the fragile VLD. I plan on a 150gr E-Tip load soon. Planned powder will be IMR-8028XBR. Results to follow in a month. Going Elk hunting with a different rifle in a week and starting new .308 load work after that.

175SMK with 41.5 gr Varget used to be my accuracy load for my old Tikka Varmint. 10 shot group 5/8". It ran a little slow, but was very accurate.

Been shooting Interbonds and SST's 165's in my Howa 26" at a hair over 2760fps with 44.5gr Varget. Depending on my eye-sight I shot four 3 shot groups friday -- all were under .65 and the smalles was about 0.18".

I really like Varget for its temperature insensitivity. Here in Virginia I wil see 72deg one day and 32 the next day...or I could see 32 in the morning and 65 to 70F in the afternoon.

Not extensive but these are working okay for me out to 400 yards...

Matt

The only lighter bullet I've tried in the Ruger was a 155gr VLD. It shot well over BL-C(2) but I went with the heavier 175gr load as my winner.

The Hornady brass listed was their Match brass. It appears to be a polished Winchester product. Once sized and trimmed it weighed the same as Winchester brass but had a better finish.

The powder I used with the 178HPBT was 2000MR, btw.

Thats one lucky rifle.... I often have to do the same thing for some unhappy weapons. You sound like me, so you also must be a GMC retired... gun)

Out of my Savage Model 10FP, pre-aluminum bedding job, this is what my best Ballistic Tip load was:

24" bbl
1-10 Twist
165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
45.7gr IMR 4064
Federal Large Rifle Primer
COAL: 2.865
MV: 2941
Brass was full-length resized

I routinely can keyhole shots with this at 200 yards, and always shoot a clover leaf with it at 300. Also, I'll hold about 4-6 inches at 600, depending on the wind, with a bipod.

My other good Ballistic Tip load is out of my Remington 700 VTR:

22"
1-12 Twist
150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
45.5gr Varget
Federal Large Rifle MATCH primer
COAL: 2.954"
MV: 2559
Brass was full-length resized

At 300 yards, when I tested this load out (this is my sweet spot for COAL on this load evidently), I fired a 4-shot group that measured .97" outside to outside. Not the fastest, but damned accurate.

Hopefully this helps in someway.

Keyholing or cloverleafing a 30 caliber at 200 yards requires groups that are about 0.3" in diameter; center to center. That's 0.15 MOA. Congratulations are in order for that. Same thing at 300 yards with the same bullet diameter means the groups are 0.10 MOA. That's benchrest record setting size if it always happens. What's interesting to me is if the rifle and ammo shoot that well at 200 and 300, under the same conditions they should print no worse than a little over 2 inches at 600. Something wierd is happening between 300 and 600 yards.

0.97 inch outside to outside means it's about .067 inch center to center; almost a cloverleaf. Even this at .223 MOA is darned good shooting.

It's amazing that your hardware does this so regularly.

I have a similar set up. A factory Howa varmint in 308 glass bedded in a laminate with a 24" tube 1-12 twist.
I shoot the 155 a max at 2860. This combo has accounted for 30 plus whitetails from 20 yds to 706 and to many coyotes to count, several past 1000 yds.
Lapua Case
fed 210 match primer
46.9 gr varget
.005 off the lands
