308 and elk

morning EDD no he was not hunting elk, gunny was hunting a species much more

dangerous. HE STARTED WITH A M70 IN 7.62 nato which was the main cartridge

adopted by the US Military. yes the gunny at one time

adapted a 50cal for sniping. respect is something we earn, evidently u need to

b schooled. sniping was done with an adapted m-14, 300wm and the 3006.lightbulb and

some devices civilians have not hear about. the M70 was one of the 1st. rifles.

then the 700 rem. action in the M40 configuration. Did u eat any dirtlightbulb

This is not correct, the chambering on his Winchester was always in 3006

That's what I thought too as referenced in #6. Perhaps he's got a different source that says otherwise.

comparing what it takes to put down a puny little human being and a 600 pound tough as nails elk is absurd.

Yep. M70 .30-06 with a fixed 10x Unertyl scope.

I was wrong...It was an 8x Unertl scope...Not a 10x.

"Hathcock generally used the standard sniper rifle: the Winchester Model 70 .30-06 caliber rifle with the standard 8-power Unertl scope. On some occasions, however, he used a different weapon: the M2 Browning machine gun, on which he mounted a 10X Unertl scope, using a bracket of his own design. Hathcock made a number of kills with this weapon in excess of 1,000 yards, including his record for the longest confirmed kill at 2,500 yards.[50] Hathcock carried a Colt M1911A1 pistol as a sidearm."

Hathcock's first scope was a Redfield. It was used until funding for the Unertls was procured. The 50 bmg was set up on a tripod with a T&E set.
