As the fitle says i have aquired a 300 wsm with a 12 twist barrel. Im loading for the 190 vld and not sure what powder to use to for optimum speed and accuracy. Any load or have compared the two powders in this combo?

I haven't shot the 190's in mine, but using 210 VLDs I have had better luck (velocity and accuracy) with H4831SC. Not sure if that will translate to yours or not.

Good luck

Brandon

Ive been leaning towards h4831scc just wasnt sure. Its a rem 700 vls that was rechambered from 308 to 300wsm. It has a 25.5in barrel with thruster brake. I made a few loads with 4831 tonight but just not sure when ill make it out to test.

Ive loaded 3 at 66 to 68 in half grain increments. Should be a good starting point. Hopfully im not starting to hot.

The data I have seen shows that you'll be OK. If in doubt, load one at 65 as a fouler - if it shows pressure at all you'll know not to move forward.

Neither powder. For optimal velocity use RL-17.

I put together a load for my friend's 22" 300 WSM with the 230 Berger. 2725 fps with 61 gr of RL-17. OAL was 2.8" to fit and feed from the magazine.

I see on Alliant's load data page that the 180's max load is 66 gr. They don't list anything heavier.
Perhaps a starting load of 61-62 and work up.

That's impressive, the best I've done with 215 is 2700 FPS out of 24". I have a pound of RL-17 to try.

Feenix,

It surprised me too. Don said make me a LR load. I had plenty of 230s on hand so I seated them deeply in the case and worked up. He flattened a cow elk with it at 300 yd. Hardly a LR shot but Don at 85 yrs young did well.

He is now 87 and still hunting and fly fishing. He has a Az antelope hunt and has the Champs permit so he can shoot from the vehicle. He is not much of a hiker anymore. Have a braked 257 I may give him to use for this hunt. That Brownig 300 wsm even with the Boss brake is too much of a kicker for window shooting.

When I grow up, I want to be able to hunt and fish (I suck at fly fishing at the moment) like Don. :)

Good luck to you and Don's hunt.

Well i made it out to shoot a bit today. I made 5 rounds of h4350 at 62.5gr for sighters and then tested the 4831sc loads. I had no chrono so no velocity numbers. The best 4831sc load was at 67gr. All 3 rounds were touching and formed the half football type line so it looks like it should be decent. But the one that surprised me was my sighters. It took 1 shot on paper then made an adjustment and put 2 in the same hole with cold clean bore. I fired my 4831 loads and saved the last 2 sighter for last and again they went in the same hole.

Ill make that same sighter load and the 67gr load to test at distance and see which holds together better and run with that.

Components are prepped remington brass and 215m primers with the above powder and bullets shooting at 100 yards.

Tested again this weekend and I had pretty good luck I think. I stuck with the h4350 because it was at lower pressures and had more velocity than 4831sc.
2x 62.5gr- 2876, 2853
2x 63gr- 2935, 2880
2x 63.5gr- 2890, 2896

I fired 3 more at 63.5 and with all five shots there was a ES of 10fps. There were no pressure signs and extraction was smooth.

All five shots were touching if not in the same hole at 100yd. I am yet to make it out to the longest mile in Edson or a cutline on my next fishing trip but with this info it should hold together well.

Nice I have had good luck with the 180 VLD and 180 Accubond with 4350. And guess where? Right about 63gr. Seems around 2850 is always a good spot with the 300 WSM. With a load of RL17 I can get the 210 VLD to 2850 without much problem either.

What is your COAL for that load? How far off the lands?
