300 WSM velocity with 225 ELD-M or 230 VLD

Certainly nothing wrong with the 300WM. But the 1000y guys have a good point: lots of competitors shoot the 300WSM while the 300WM is non-existent in their world. It's not just that the 300 WSM is more accurate - there are many factors that play into their choice to shoot the 300WSM over the 300WM - but in my opinion, the cumulative effect of a few advantages pushes the scale to favor the WSM.

I cant compare as I'm not a 7mm guy and dont own one of any flavor. My 300 ss is also over 12 pounds iirc and has a 3 port muscle brake on it so it's really tame. I might have talked a friend into a 30wsm but he wont have it in time to give you the answers you were looking for as far as speed we will get with the 225.

I may stand corrected... but I think if you run the ballistics on the ELD 208 at 3000 FPS or as close as you can get...it will out preform your heavier bullets in the 300 WSM..

I don't have any experience with 225s or 230s in the WSM, but I do have some with 208s. My cousin has a Savage with a factory 26" .300 WSM barrel. We worked up a load last year with it shooting 208s around 2860fps with RL26. His rifle has the factory chamber and everything. This load was not showing any pressure signs, other than a little flattening of the primers. I do not remember the exact charge weight off the top of my head, but I can check my notes when I get home tonight. I believe he was around 68grs of RL26 with the 208 in W-W brass.

My buddy's had .280 freebore and ran a 230 Berger at just under 3,000fps with 7828SSC, 30'' tube, but had better accuracy with the 215's

Adding a little life to a very old thread. I just finally got around to tinkering with my 300wsm, which is built on a Savage 338lm repeater action, sitting in a HS Precision stock, and wearing a 28" 9 twist Hawk Hill barrel. After the barrel finished speeding up, I'm at 3026fps, ES 9 SD 3.7, Bertram brass, 225ELDM, 3.246" ish to the tip on a .020" jump, RL26 and Fed210Ms. Also shot a 3 shot .141" group sighting in the other day.

Reamer free bore?

SAAMI reamer, elliptical (1.5°-30 to 1°-30) throating reamer used to add .285" freebore. OAL with the bullet out far enough to be engraved is 3.271" with 225s that measure 1.652", just touching enough to stick using a Stoney Point with Hornady modified case is 3.266", 2.500" and 2.495" on the ogive for what it's worth. I also wouldn't recommend this with Norma or Winchester brass, Bertram has 1.3-2grns more H2O capacity and is much stronger. I'm not seeing pressure with this combo, but it could be dangerous in a smaller action and with different brass. I can go up another 1.2grns before I pancake a Fed210M, which is a terrible way to gauge pressure, but typically 210Ms pancake at 70-72k psi, and pierce at around 75k depending on the batch. I'm figuring I'm 64-66k. Brass doesn't actually get worked much at this range, and is fairly easy to resize, especially considering the brand. 3rd or 4th firing for some cases, still requires both hands to fully seat a primer.
