300 Win Mag???

So, I realize this is a personal decision. I am just trying to get a little feedback.

I am thinking strongly of going with a 300 WM for my next rifle. I already have one, pre-64 M70 that was my dads. It shoots great, but…… it is a shoulder killer. I can't bring myself to putting a muzzle brake on it due to collector and sentimental value.

So here's the dilemma. I can go out of the box with something like X-Bolt, Tikka, bergara, or others for around the price point I am thinking. What would I be looking at custom-wise? Right now I am looking at just the rifle. I will figure out optics at a later time.

My goal is 800+ Yards. This will be used for hunting also. So weight is a consideration, but it doesn't have to be the featherweight option.

I am already a setup to load 300 WM which is another reason. I don't really want a new caliber due to how tough it is is to get certain things at the moment.
I have the same problem. Shoulder killer. I have installed a Witt machine muzzle break on my 300WM and actually sat through a 30 round session shooting long range. It actually felt like I was shooting a 243. I am not exaderating. They are ugly as hell but they clamp on to the muzzle and are removable AND inexpensive.

Good thinking IMO...I have my Grandpa's P64/ M70/FWT/06. He bought it the year I was born so it's pretty special to me. Long story short, I inherited it when I was 13 or so, and then in 1992 I got bored with the 06 round.

I knew I wouldn't use it anymore as a 06 so I rebarreled it. Kept the original barrel and hunted the heck out of it. Wore out 3 barrels and I know that Gramps was smiling.

Long and the short I had a smith put the original barrel back on it this summer and I'm now running amuck with it again.

Something to think about eh
I think that's a helluva idea really! Put the factory barrel to the side. Screw on a barrel of your choice, slide a 3.6 mag box into the rifle along with a quality stock and you can easily turn it back into your dads rifle.

Buy once, Cry once!!!

Take $1500 off for the optic and that is what you are looking at for a Top Tier custom and the action isn't "custom" but worked over as good as any. Now I want to buy in Dammit!!
I have one of these. VERY accurate. I love it.

Same problem here. Shoulder killer. I tried a Witt Machine muzzle break and literally experienced a shooting episode of firing 300wm like I was shooting a 243. I am not filling you with crap. It's a clamp on design and shouldn't damage the rifle in any way. It is ugly though, but **** it works.

I'm happy with my christensen..
I would go that route over bergera for sure

300 prc

I have been watching Christensen for awhile too. Should have mentioned them in my OP.
I have a Christensen 300 WM with carbon fiber barrel and I love it. The weight is perfect for high country Elk hunting and The accuracy is awesome!! I've tried custom loads but for some reason it loves the Federal Fusion 180gr.???

You mention that you can't bring yourself to put a muzzle brake on the gun due to it being a collecttor. To me, that implies that you'd might sell it someday. If that's true I can why you'd not brake it.

You also mention the sentimental value, that to me implies that it's a rifle you wish to pass on someday. If so, then I see no reason not to brake it.

First and foremost I'd say sort out if it's a long term family rifle that you'll pass on or if it's a collector that you want to cash in on someday.

Personally, I'd say brake it and use it!
+1, brake it, use/enjoy it and then pass it along

I own a T3x Superlite in 300 WM. Put a muzzle break on it and had the trigger polished. Love the gun

300PRC has all the good qualities of 300WM and none of the bad. It will mean a new set of dies and maybe powder but your bullet choices will be even better.

You can always put on a new buttpad - have a gunsmith form one to the stock so it's a factory looking fit. A muzzle break probably would work on that old barrel. Not enough metal to safely do the threads.

Grab a Bergara Ridge, add an ec tuner break and you should set.
