300 Weatherby question

I've switched to N570 in my 300 WBY (26" barrel). I shoot 215 Berger Hyrbids. During load development I had 2 excellent nodes the lower achieved a velocity of 3050FPS and the upper was 3125 FPS. Both were extremely accurate and each had a SD under 5. I settled on the lower because it is easy on the brass.

Man I got the bug a couple years back to "upgrade and improve" my load of 45 years in my .300 Wby Mag. Beautiful old Mark V made in Germany. I used a dozen new 180-200 gr bullets and ALLLLLLLL those newer/slower/cosmic powders and at the end of the day...I went back to my old school IMR-4831 powder, though I did upgrade to 180 gr Barnes TTSX. I use 79 grs I-4831, 180 gr Barnes TTSX, Fed 215 primers, Weatherby brass. I get a pretty smokin' 3200 fps out of that and it gives a commanding vote down range--not surprised with 1 shot kills on Eland and Kudu in Africa, Elk in NM and Red Stag exotics herein Texas. I also traded the old Weatherby nostalgia scope on it for a Viper Vortex 4-16 X 44 HS-T scope. Very excellent bang for your buck glass. It really hammers that 1000 yd gong after 45 yrs of shooting. Long time of ownership but < 750 rds through the #2 contour barrel I put on it about 1980.

If you can afford to shoot the throat out of a 300 the cost of a barrel should not bother you .

Blc3128 is that out of a 26 inch barrel. I may have to try N570 if I don't see an improvement in my groups with Retumbo. I got 3004 with 86.0gr of Retumbo and the 212ELDX out of my 24 inch Sako. That load is the max in the Nosler manual at 3008 out of a 26 inch barrel. Both of these powders have really impressed me with their accuracy and speed.

I used 7828 for years, last year I run off 50rds using 1000 and 180gr partitions for big game in NY & Pa

Very interested in the N570 results - the H4831 I used 20+ years ago nobody local stocks it.

It (H4831) may not be available now. I bought eight pounds when I worked up a load for the new barrel on my 300. I have been using it in the 300 WBY for 50 years. No substitute for horsepower!

Looks like I will be giving N570 a go. My plan will be to work up carefully to the Quick Load max of 88.2gr. I will be seating bullets at 3.615 inches. My hope is I will reach 3050fps with out any pressure signs.

Yes I would like to shoot the Berger 215 or the ABLR 190s. Would like to push the 215s over 3k with a 27-28" barrel, if I could hit 3100 that would be great but not going to kill the brass to hit my need for speed.

88.4 with a COAL of 3.710" gave me ~3050. Again, I ran it hotter and it was accurate , but tough on brass. Please note its a bulky powder. A drop tube may be necessary. Also, pay attention to your brass. If you are truly chasing velocity of 3100FPS I suspect it won't be too hard on brass however don't expect amazing brass life. I would start out with 85 and work my way up 1/2 grain at a time until you hit pressure signs. IMO if you are interested in raw horsepower and overbore cartridges - decreased brass life/ increased throat erosion have already been considered and are known.
Your barrel will heat up very quickly. N570 burns hot!

BLC, are you shooting a Mark V with a 1:10 twist barrel? I am going to be playing with a 300 Wby Accumark I picked up and was wanting to run the 215, but per Berger's calculator, looks like I would need a slightly faster twist to get full stabilization. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious. Also, 3.7ish COAL sounds about right based on what I've read but I will measure my mag and check feeding. I have 180 gr Hammers and 210 VLD's, RL26, H1000, H4831sc, Fed 215, GM215M, CCI 250's and Norma Brass. Need to stop thinking about experimenting and just go shoot, lol.

BLC3128 Thanks for the info - in the last 25 years chamberings have become much more overbore besides I see chamber pressure have risen higher in order to get higher velocity of these newer offerings which makes me wonder if the primer pockets are not going to loosen after the initial firing.
3 reloads & I scrap my rifle brass starting from virgin brass.
Presently I have 3 rifles to test these loads in "time permitting" Mark V 26in - Mark X McGowen 26in 1/10 new & Montana SS 26in 1/10 my current hunting rifle (40 shots max since new) LOL I also have a Roy "Joke" rifle 300wby 22in barrel & chromebore from the late 40's or early 50's called a WBY CARBINE and yes it has open sights built on a FN action, I cannot think the velocity would be much greater than a 30-06

Time has not been good to me when it comes to hobbies and I can shoot 300yds in my backyard

Yes 26"'Mark V (Terramark). Pushing a 215 beyond 2950FPS shouldn't be an issue with a 1-10" twist. I shoot mine out to 1,300 yards without issues.
