A friend of mine is wondering what he can expect in velocity with a 180 grain bullet and a 26 inch barrel.

And can you recommend a load?

Len , my 300 is a 24" bbl.

I'm using 180 accubonds , 87.8 grains H1000 , 215 primer , remington brass . ave fps is 3165

I'm going to play a little more with IMR7828 . 180 accubond , 82.5 grains IMR7828 , 215 primer , rem brass . ave fps 3150

When I first start loading with a 300 wby I load 82 grains of H4831, cci250 primer and seat the 180 just short enough so it will feed through the mk 5 action. This is a generic accuracy load good in any 300 wby with freebore. I always try this first to see if it is a shooter. I have never seen a mk 5 that did not shoot this load well. Velocity is right at 3200 fps in a 26" barrel. Some newer powders will get more velocity. But this is a shooter to try in any 300 wby.

I shoot 210SMK out of my .300 Weatherby.

27-inch barrel 3-groove. I get 2975fps average with 80.5grains of H1000. Fed215 primers. It will go faster, but this load has the best extreme spread. FWIW.

Len, I worked quite a bit with my 300 Wby. This is no High Velocity load but it worked great to 550 with a BC reticle.

Mark V 26" accumark Barrel

Wby case

Fed 215 GM primer

79 gr of H-4831

190 Berger VLD seated just .020" shorter than the mag box so it will pass through freely.

Velocity was 3050 and was a pretty consistant 1/2 moa rifle to 550 yards.
