Some time back I started a thread about "putting magnum punch in your '06." I am considering rechambering my 20" barreled '06 (700 BDL CUSTOM DELUXE) later known as a Mountain rifle. I am thinking about ordering some dies and was wondering if there was enough interest by others to order extra sets?
This is a very easy, inexpensive, conversion and just takes reaming out the old '06 chamber with a Sherman reamer. The results are pretty amazing! What you end up with is approx. 300 WSM ballistics out of your old '06.
I was getting 3050'/sec. with 190's out of a 28" barrel. I am pretty sure that I can get at least 2850' out of a 20". Let me know what you think?.............Thanks/Rich

Rich, I think it would be a cool idea. I've never been a fan of the .30-06, but I do love Ackley Improved & Sherman calibers. :D

I wonder if I can talk my uncle into doing this to his old Rem 700 '06 he was talking about having re-done......But he doesn't like handloads (he's a weird and very hard-headed individual).

I might try to find an old cheap 700 '06 and do this to it just for fun.

Post some pics of the .300 Sherman cases and loaded rounds when you get some fire-formed. I am interested.

This is it vs the '06 case. I had one on a B-78 action that I killed a moose @720, a muley @680 and an elk close up. It is capable of 1000 yard plus big game hunting.

Rich, what is your preference for brass to work with or better yet is their a certain brand that you don't like(Split necks ect)?

I will be running it fairly hard. I will start with Winchester .270 win as i have about 400 new never fired cases.

I know RWS is top notch. If the Winchester isn't up to running it hard i will just save them and get better brass for the 300 Sherman. No sense in ruining perfectly fine brass.

WW works ok with some sorting and has a lot of capacity. The Norma has about the same capacity as WW but is FAR better quality. The RWS has less capacity but is extremely tough so you can still load for the same velocity or more.

I'll go ahead and order some Norma and RWS to see what i like better then order a good bit of whichever i decide on.

Hopefully my smith will be calling me for that reamer really soon. Should be within the next 2 months! Hopefully all the dies will be here and I can have some fun!

Thank you for answering all my questions Rich!

Any time!

I wanna tag in, I'm interested in seeing what those 225s will do.
I think the 208 would be a perfect fit for that case. It seems to shine in a standard '06 so the Sherman will be a improvement.

I agree. I was going to order the 208's also but they were out of stock where i ordered the brass and 225's. I actually think the 225's may be a better fit for closer range shot with their slower speed. I'm still going to get the 200-225 ELD-X / ELD-M line and berger 215 & 230 for load development. I'll let the gun/magnetospeed tell me which one to go with!

If you could get the 225 to 2600 fps it would be a long range hammer.

This is a qoute from Idaho Trecker requarding his 300 Sherman Shortmag (SS) and 225's

" I maxed it out at 2875 fps but that was absolute max just to see. Probably would be able to shoot it comfortably around 2770 for the ss. You should be able to hold 3-4 more grains of powder than me."

So with that being said, I should be happy where they end up!

I don't think you will have any trouble shooting the 225's at 2800'.........Rich
