Is the 300 rum really worth the hassle of finding brass and then the cost of it over a 300 win mag? Win mag brass and ammo in general is so much easier to find. I'm just torn because I'm thinking if I'm going to get a 300 mag I might as well get all the performance I can which in the gun I want would be the ultra mag but the win mag is available also. Guess what I'm asking is should I get the ultra mag and hope brass comes back around at reasonable prices or just go with the sure bet in the win mag?

I went through 3 300 RUMs and finally got tired of low brass and barrel life, heavy recoil, etc. for a couple hundred feet of velocity when a 300 WM will kill something just as dead to 1000 yards. I built a 30/375 S.I. which is a little more than the WM with no belt. If I were you and wanted to stay factory, I would go with the WM. Just my opinion.......Rich

You would have to define what you want to do. For me, the 300 wm has done everything I wanted it to and then some. If I were going to step beyond my 300 wm I'd being going up to a 338 edge or Lapua to make it worth the while. I'm driving a 208 Amax out of a 26" 300 wm at 2940; it does everything I could hope for. If you want to go beyond 1400 yards maybe the rum would be worth it but most people never stretch the limits of the wm any way.

I own both. Go with the 300 WM. This no brass situation for the RUM is to frustrating. My 300 RUM needs a rebarrel to a EDGE but I cant find brass so I am just letting all my parts sit here until it becomes available. My custom 300 WM shoots the 215 Berger right at 3000 fps; and uses 12 gr less powder than the RUM.

I chose the 300 win mag over the RUM. It does everything you need it to do. My rifle is not getting the high velocities that others are reporting with the 210 and 215 bullets. Although I can push up to the mid 2900 range, my accurate loads are in the mid 2850 range. Some barrels shoot faster/slower than others.

But when I wear out this barrel I will likely get it rechambered in the new 30 Nosler and easily be able to push the big 210+ weight bullets north of 3000 fps.

at the altitude I hunt the 215 berger or new 212 hornady ELD will carry 1800 fps and plenty of energy to as far as I'll ever shoot at an animal, even with the 300 win mag.

I'd go with the 300 WM. I'd been toying with getting a 300 RUM, but after seeing zero brass in over 2 years, I took that as a sign to look elsewhere. I only saw 2 boxes of loaded ammo in that same time frame.

If a 300WM isn't enough, I'd step up to the .338LM. Ammo is readily available and with the large muzzle brakes on the guns (at least on both Savage .338LMs I own) the recoil isn't bad at all.

300 Win Mag brass isn't that much easier to find I finally found new brass after almost two years of looking.

I had the same decision a couple years ago and I went with the 300 Win Mag.
