30 378 weatherby

The best data would be to set up some place where you can shoot at about 1500 yds with that 30x378.
Otherwise theres no real point to even owning one.
If theres a river in the valley, make sure to have somebody watching for splashes from those 150s. lol

I have never had a weatherby, so i picked the 30-378. Arizona ammunition push 130gr barnes to 4200fps. I havent quite figured out how, but it makes me feel like 155 warner tools solid can run 3700 to 3900. Maybe not but im gonna find out

Dont mean to be contrary, but over the years I have found H870 to be the best, but you can no longer easily find it. With that said RL22 and RL33 both do well, as well as 869, but IMO H1000 will probably get you what you want, with consistency.

with the 245 grain berger bullets what would you load for powder and what velocity out of a 30 inch barrel
Talk to their tech support (660-460-2802) directly, they have a list of the most current powders they have tested. They are your best source for your baseline load. Cory has been very helpful when I call.

The late Howard Wolfe of Miflinburg Pa was one of the first to experiment with the 378 Wetherby case necked down to 30 cal.
In the 60s he designed a large 3 lug action specifically for that cartridge.
The long 36" barrels were dificult to come by back then as very few barrel makers made them.
The very best powder at that time was WW2 surplus H 570.
H 870 would also work, but required more of it in order to achieve the same velocity.
WC 872 is almost identicle to H 870 as for burn rate and it will work also.
For about 30 years i used a 36" barreled 30x378 on # 29 Wolfe action.
Howard recommended using the 200 gr SMK, with 112 or 113 gr of H570 which produced about 3500 fps from a 36" barrel in my gun.
On an average day from my 100 yd zero it took 145 clicks to get to 1500 yds.
My late friend Rich used WC 872 and he needed 118 gr to duplicate my velocity.
As for the BC factor, at 1500 yds, the 200 gr SMK outperformed the 220 SMK in my gun by several feet in elevation. And the 240 SMK was considerably further downhill if the same elevation was added in all cases.
So velocity does rule at least to some point.
And beyond that point its best to move on to a 338, and not just any 338 either.

I have 1 30/378 and 3 7/300 Weatherbys that him and his son built. His son is still building rifles.

Howard also had a short version of the 30-378 for 1000yd. target shooting I know several guys using them. Now most guys are going to 6mm and 6.5 for punching paper. I still know of at least one guy using the 30-378 short up there .

Yeah so do I. We shoot up there and we to went to the 6mm.

Did you count me in that group Bo?
Mine is on a MarkV Wetherby action with a 30" Hart.
Actually what Howard did with that cartridge, was to create the 300 Norma many years before there was a 300 Norma.
I didnt realize that till maybe 5 or 6 years ago when a friend visited our camp for bear hunting.
He had just had a 300 Norma built and showed me a cartridge.
I said that looks just like my little Wolfey, so we compared them, and took 2 emptys and checked them out.
They were within 1 gr as for capacity weighed with water.
So could the person who created the Norma have gotten ahold of one of Howards cases somehow?
