30-06 for Long Range

And the reason your missing it is because youve never watched animals get hit at the longer distances.
Note i didnt say you couldnt, i simply said you havent.
I have seen plenty of animals get hit at lr, but thank you :) You know nothing about me or what we hunt with, so it's ignorant to assume. Either way, God bless you.

i once shot a small wren at about 200 yards as it sat in a small leave less bush with a standard .22 LR out of a remington 581 bolt action with a 6x scope, don,t ask me how many times i missed other wrens before i got a hit.

I would wager if you have to go on this website and ask if the 30-06 is good enough for ELR hunting, you probably aren't ready. Not trying to be insulting, but most anybody that is experienced, driven or has an idea of L.R. or E.L.R. knows they can go online and look up the load data and ballistic tables of about any cartridge out there... and they can deduce from those numbers whether a cartridge is up to the task. Better yet, they will plug their numbers in to Stre Lok or some other ballistics program and get their answer. Will your bullet have the terminal performance required to make a clean kill... not a hit, but a kill? Will it have enough fps to perform correctly at your desired range? Will there be enough fpe left to cleanly kill? Those answers are found in ballistic tables/programs. Then, YOU have to determine which, if any of those bullets will be preferred by your rifle. "John Smith" or "Leroy Brown" cannot give you that answer. They can tell you what THEIR rifle can do, and at what distance... that is about it.
I had a thirty-eight hear old acquaintance come out to deer hunt behind my house last weekend. For the third time he stated to me: "You are going to have to show me how to shoot long range". He borrowed bullets from me to hunt with... THAT DAY! He asked where he should set up to hunt. I asked him how far he was comfortable shooting. He bragged that he could hold baseball sized groups at 100 yards!!! He did kill a stomper of a buck, at 150-200 yard. He hit it in the jaw, the neck and the gut. He is not even ready for moderate range hunting IMO. If he settles for those type of 100 yard groups and shows up without bullets, his mind and drive are not in the right place to be an accomplished shooter IMO. You have to want to put in the time and effort to research, to tune your equipment, and to practice. Honestly, OCD helps, lol.
Not saying you don't have that drive, but long range shooting or hunting doesn't come automatically without effort and dedication. I limit my shots to 750 yds and in on game, and it took money, time and dedication to become proficient and confident to this point. It is just a personal limit I set for myself.
There are better cartridges for E.L.R. hunting. No sense in arguing that. Personally, I would limit the '06 to 700-800 yds, maybe less, which does not define E.L.R. in my mind. I no longer hunt with an '06, but used to quite a bit... and may again some day just for nostalgic reasons. It's a fine cartridge with a proven track record.

I didn't notice this thread was in the elr forum. Duh! That said, I wouldn't use my 30-06, 300wm or 300wsm for the task. Definitely step it up to rum, edge, etc for elr.

Old September post, but it caught my attention as I've not seen that high of ballistic performance in a 30-06 especially from a 180gr Nosler bullet. For comparison, Gun Data's 30-06 ballistic chart for a 165gr AccuTip shows a drop of 55.3" @ 500 yards. JAT :)

Double check the altitude for Western elevations, the 300yd zero not 200 and 2900fps loads from a long throat chamber and 24-26 inch barrels.

Well the modern day velocities for quite a few cartridges seem to have improved in recent years by a considerable amount. There used to be about a 100 fps advantage for a 300 Wby over a 300 Win.
But it appears that has changed, same goes for the 7 mm Rem, as a 280 appears to now be door to door and about to take the lead. lol
I guess im not up to speed on all that has transpired in recent years.

Those are numbers to be revealed as that small of a drop for an 30-06 is very unusual. A 7mm mag can still keep way ahead of a .280 and a .300 win mag way ahead a 30-06 if one uses the same loads, barrels, elevations, etc.

Sounds like we all should all just get long throated 26" barreled 06s then huh...Who even needs 300 magnums these days lol...That is until you compare apples to apples and get a long throated 300 mag with a 28" barrel, then it puts the 06 right back in the backseat where it belongs :)
