284 win velocities with rl16

I'm getting 2800 with 168vld with H4350 out of a 22 inch tube. It shoots so dam good that I haven't tried anything else.

couldn't tell you as I have a 1&9.5 twist and this load shoots one hole. I just shot an elk at 919 with it and had a great wound

51.1 RL-16
wlr primer
Hornady 6.5-284 necked up and turned
Hornady 162 bthp.
2819 10 shot es 13
groups consistently 0.5 moa or better
mild pressure on 8th reload and going strong
this is my savage hunting gun with 1-9 , 25 inch brux barrel there is more velocity to be had but this just works from 25-83 degrees every time

I was hitting pressure at 2908 with RL-16 but RL-26 and 165 game changers 2958 with no problem just ran out of capacity

I think most 284 shooters already found their loads with older powders. I am no different.

Since 1983 I evolved first using IMR 4350 then H4350 and now using RL-17. Getting 2925 fps with 52 gr with 168 Berger VLD hunting bullet. This is with a custom reamer spec'd .315 neck. OAL is 3.050" bullet .005" into lands. Sporter barrel is 23.5" long.

Vegas Steve, Start with those "mild" loads you commented on and report back on your findings.

Alliant says: " Consistent maximum velocity in extreme weather conditions "

I have used it in a 338 RCM, 284 win and a 6mm-284. Typically I don't use my hunting rounds in the hotter months around Tucson.

I did measure velocity for that 6mm-284:

8-21/15 90 degrees 3474
12-15-2014 45 degrees 3433

this makes 1.15 fps per degree velocity change
