.284 175 ELD-X on Deer at 600 Yards - PICS

I have found that Berger 180 grain VLD hunting in 7 mag will do a good job on any Deer, Elk, Moose and Pronghorn that I have used it on from 462 yards out to 978 yards on an Elk all with one shot and only the Pronghorn ran for about 50 yards all the others dropped in less then 10 yards..
The closer the shot the more meat loss, but its the best long range bullet I have found in over 60+ years of shooting..
Yes it's nice that Berger made a 180-g bullet for the 7mm cause the standard 140 is small for Elk or Moose. With All my other rifles I use Bergers but for some reason my savage 300 win-mag just hates them I have to many hours in load development and on the range trying to make them shoot, when I loaded up the A-MAX or ELDX their was my clover leaf and they work just the same as the Bergers always a clean kill.

Hi
If you want an 100% clean kill the shot to take is the neck shot or base of neck and severe the spinal cord it wont run any where and will drop instantly, but its not always achievable , and I'm afraid in some circles an head shot is a No No because if you are not deadly accurate the animal can run away with its jaw blown of and a long lingering death may follow and nobody wants that to happen do we now , but what I was originally talking about was the best shot placement for the least meat damage to the carcass so least mess all round for you to dress out ! on main thing is nmot to be too over gunned for your quarry species ?

I use anything from a .270win , .308,6.5 -270 WSM, .270 WSM ,7mm Rem Mag .300Win Mag , 9.3 X 64 Brenneke
With bullets from 150 Grn for the .270 Win up to 9.3 X 64 Brenneke with a 293 Grn and a lot of other weights in between producing

I also shoot many smaller rounds from .17 Rem up to .22-250 Rem for smaller game species

Some interesting notes about the biggest round I use below !

Approx Impact velocity from 2800fps to 2500 fps
Approx Impact Energy 4318ft lbs

For the 9.3 X 64 Brenneke , 9,3x64 is the strongest cartridge among the European 9.3 mm group of cartridges with excellent ballistic. In comparison to the cartridge .375 H&H Magnum

9.3x64 Brenneke

If there was ever an overlooked cartridge that was adequate for any big game anywhere in the world, including the dangerous game of Africa, it could well be the 9.3x64 Brenneke. It was the brainchild of Wilhelm Brenneke in the period around 1910 and was the largest and most powerful of the Brenneke cartridges. The cartridge had an enthusiastic acceptance from big game hunters in Europe, and it didnt take long for it to find its way to Africa.

The infamous ivory hunter John Taylor rated the 9.3x64 Brenneke as an excellent medium-bore cartridge right along side the .375 H&H Magnum. Not only was Taylor a professional ivory hunter, but he was also a student of ballistics and cartridge performance. Taylors theories of knockout power expounded upon in his books are still considered by some as a valid comparison of different cartridges.

I get a Elk tag in Arizona every other year for the rifle hunt and in the off years I go with my buds, I have a 385 bull on my wall so now I switch up on the cow and bull hunts and I have read alot of articles on elk hunting and how they say you can hunt elk with a 6mm or 270 and even a 243 or 6.5 yes they will kill but only at closer ranges this is Long Range Hunting forums ! You need some horse power to take these Elk down and the longer the range the more power you need and these lager bullets now days are really nice for the task at hand and the wind has alot harder time pushing them around.I have been involved with at least 60 to 70 Elk tags if not mine someone in our hunting party and I have seen over the years to use the rite gun for the rite job anything less than a 30-cal is like changing a flat tire with a pair of pliers, yes it may work is that what you want in your tool box ? 1 shot 1 clean kill.

Meat loss crap. You got the animal down at 600 yards and people think you can move back a few inches and pick your impact spot exactly....oh and make sure you miss the deer tick....dont want any contaminated blood getting into you deer.

Bust that shoulder and get that animal down before he gets into an area you dont want......job well done......just saying.
