280AI loads and targets

I use 63.5 grains of Retumbo lit by CCI BR2 to push Berger's VLD 168 grain @ 3015 out of a 26 inch PacNor barrel. Brass from Nosler, resized to match headspace as close as possible. This group was checking zero for trajectory validation, 1.111" @ 201 yards. Group was .77" high, so I corrected and slipped the turret before shooting long. Range was mud to the eyeballs, so I didn't get pictures from the 700 yard steel, but in the scope it was about 3/4 moa.

Still working up loads for mine but I've been very lucky as my rifle doesn't seem to care what you run through it. Rifle is a Savage 110 with a 27" Rem varmint contour Bartlein barrel. Pictures left to right and top to bottom are 160 gr. Nosler AB, 162 gr. Hornady A-Max, 168 gr. Barnes LRX and 168 gr. Berger VLD hunting. Also shot 150 grain Combined Technology moly bullets extremely well but can't find my target.

Best and most consistent group to date was with 160 Nosler AB, 56.5 grains of 7828, Norma brass and Winchester primer. Group measured .279" @ 100 yards and just less than 2" at 500. This is a moderate load with an average velocity of 2910. I have had velocities up to 3083 with the 160's and RL-25 but not with the same level of accuracy. Have two new powders (magpro and magnum) to try but 3 days of freezing rain here in West Texas has slowed down my range trips.

Start light........work load up........you know the drill.

Cooper Excalibur 280 AI, 25" barrel shooting 168 berger classics with H4831SC and 210M primers, Nosler 280 AI brass. Bullets are .010 Jump. Speed 2900 fps over the magnetospeed. The next node was at 61.5 and not quite as accurate. I have not tried any other powders or primers yet.

The top groups are 100 yards and the bottom is at 200 yards, the squares are 1/2"

What twist is your barrel and what velocity on the 168gr LRX?

I've got a 24" 9twist 280AI being built (**** its hard to wait...). I pondered on picking up some 168gr LRX to try out but I was going to start out working up the 145gr LRX since I have some already (load them in my 7-08 also) and I've heard mixed reports on folks getting that bullet to stabilize.

My barrel is a 27" 9 twist. Been looking through my range book and I can't find the velocity on the 168 vld or the lrx. Never shot a lot of them so it's possible I did not run them through the chrono...........or my old mind forgot to write it down.

Tried some new powder the other day, ramshot magnum. Stuck it behind some Hornady 154gr sst's and shot my best group ever with this rifle, an even .2" at 100 yards. I will be working with this powder some more.

It was the lrx not the vld I was curious on (not sure if you had a typo or misread my inquiry). Edit: Nevermind I read to fast.

I haven't seen any of the ramshot line around nor H4831SC. I have some IMR7828ssc and IMR4350 to start out with. I am getting anxious. I have some 145lrx and some 150gr bonded blems from midway (look like a hornady made 150gr accutip) to start with.

I've shot a bunch of 168s and 180 Bergers...RL17 gives velocity and very accurate, its just a bit sensitive to temp but not as bad for me as everyone says. With 27" 9 twist Krieger, I shoot 168s at about 3100 because that's a match limit and its accurate but I can get more out of it. 180s at about 3040. Both shoot lightsout! 8s and 9s @500 yards. It has grouped well inside of a 20" plate at a mile. One hole @100, I don't shoot much at 100, just checking velocity and wasting bullets. Looking at RL 23 now..might be even better.
