I know there have been plenty of post but I'm having some trouble developing a load in my newly built 280 ackley improved. I've been playing with 168 and 180 Bergers as well as 162 a max's. I've tried working around several loads I've found on here with no luck. Thanks in advance for any help. The rifle is a trued 700 action with a fluted #5 benchmark barrel in a McMillan stock with a Jewell trigger

I haven't played with the 162/168 class bullets.... but 140s and 180s.

With my M48 in 280 AI, Im running 57.5 RL17,215, and a 140 Nosler CT 3.340 OAL.. does about 3250.
The 180 load is a Berger VLD hunting, WLRM, 60 I7977, 3.445 OAL... projected velocity is 28-2850. Reason I say that is I was playing with 171 Match Burners, and that was the same powder charge. I was getting 2880 with that.

Thanks for the info. I don't have that powder you mentioned with the 180's. I had the new barrel put on to take advantage of higher bc bullets it was originally a 1-12 twist lilja that wouldn't stabilize anything much over 130

The Ackley I have is a 1-9....
I'm having one built that will wear a Brux #5 that's going to be a 1-8.
The 1-9 twist will take a 175-180 in this round... but Im around 3200 ft ASL. Not sure the stability factor elsewhere.

The bad thing is, the neck still holds a LOT of that 180. I set it out to 3.445, and it wont fit in the mag well.... however the bullet jump is still a 1/2 an inch.

Joel, our range is at about 1700 feet asl.... our hunting grounds are between 2500 and 3200 feet asl...

Well I finally got it straightened out. I followed the guidelines from Berger on finding a seating depth and was actually able to use the load from another guy on here. At .050 off the lans I am shooting one ragged hole with 63 grains of retumbo a federal 210m and 168 vld's. .010 off the lans the group was a little over 2 inches

I shoot 162 AMax bullets in front of 58 grains of RL-22. Great accuracy and an easy 3050 fps from my 26" Shilen. My gun will take 61 grains without showing pressure at over 3100 but accuracy is not as good.-------SS
