McMillan Gamestalker Edge Fill

All work done by Snowy Mtn Rifle Co out of Hamilton, MT.

Components:

Virgin Nosler 280 AI Brass
Winchester Large Rifle Primers
169gr Hammer Hunter
Powder: H1000
Starting Charge: 57.0gr
Max Charge: 62.1gr
OAL 3.450"

I just got everything put together last night and made my maiden voyage with the rifle this morning. I cleaned the barrel with Hoppes to remove anything that might be in there from the build process.

The first shot (fouler) was directly below the bullseye so I figured with my remaining 11 shots I'd see how the Hammers would group. I think this is indicative of good things to come.

Velocity:

57.0gr-------> 2698
57.5gr-------> 2708
58.0gr-------> 2727
58.5gr-------> 2759
59.0gr-------> 2761
59.5gr-------> 2804
60.0gr-------> 2818
60.5gr-------> 2841
61.0gr-------> 2839
61.5gr-------> 2870
61.8gr-------> 2905
62.1gr-------> 2904

Notes:

For 168gr projectiles Hodgdon Powders lists 57.8gr of H1000 as a minimum charge. They list 61.5gr as a compressed Maximum Charge.

With my combination I immediately noticed a very faint ejector mark at 57.5gr (below published minimum). At 62.1gr the slight ejector mark turned into the slightest of ejector swipes (see brass pic below). Bolt lift still felt easy through all charge weights.

The impact not included in the group was the fouler down a brand new bore.

Is this part of your new barrel break in process?
I don't even see an ejector mark?
Some people believe in barrel break in, others don't. I'm somewhere in the middle. I opted not to do anything to this one besides just shooting it.

My goal for the range time this morning was to just find where I started seeing a hint of pressure signs. If you zoom in on the pic of the cartridge, you can see the ejector mark around the "P" on the "IMP" stamp.

Tomorrow I'm gonna shoot groups for real.
