28 vs 33 Nosler

If it has to be one of those, the 33 cause it will do everything the 28 can do and then some. However, since you already have a 7mmRM and 338 winch, why bother? .378 Wby maybe? 26 nosler? Cause you have 30 and up well covered, but nothing in mid range? 26 will kill anything in WY and most anything in AK, but you have better selections for those big cuddly Brown Bears than it by far.
I guess you and I think a lot alike. I have a new 340 Weatherby to hunt with this year. I also have a 378 Weatherby that I have hunted with since the early 80s. I put a break on the 378 a few years after I bought it because breaks were becoming popular and I wanted to try it. It sure did away with the recoil but I had no idea it was going to be so loud to shoot. I have to say that I am left-handed and wish I could find a left-hand 338-378. I love the 33 calibers. I'm afraid to call the Weatherby Custom Shop because they might tell me that could build me a left-hand 338-378 and then I would have to buy it. So, to the OP, try something in 33 cal. I think you will love it. Just make sure you have enough bottom metal for Long bullets and enough throat. The animals you shoot will thank you!

Why not split the difference and build a 30 Nosler? Just a thought.

I have a 28 Nosler. 195 EOL @ an easy 3084fps. Can get up to 3150, but brass life (and consequently barrel life) really suffer at those speeds. Run the numbers, and it keeps up with my .300RUM pushing a 230 @ 3113 to maintain 1800fps & 1500ft/lbs for elk. 1340 yards for the 28 Nos, 1310 yards for the .300RUM.

Both outrun a 33 Nosler with a 300gr Hyb @ 2750fps too.

A good custom rifle is a dream to shoot, I have manufactured guns that wont group with a Lane or Pierce or one of many builders. I've killed a lot of elk with an 06 factory ammunition, but most under 200 yards. The Shot placement is everything, but I've seen them 3 leg elk run with the herd and never miss a step.
The hammer of Thor Dallas Lane 28 Nosler, 195 Berger's havent looked back at anything else

Brass life is exactly why I built a 30-28.
I wanted a 215 going 3100 to do that you have to run a straight 30 Nosler pretty hard with ADG brass and the correct freebore. Factory 30 Nosler ammo isn't gonna get you much more than a good 300WM thats set up properly with handloads.
I normally don't post pics of stuff I shoot but this was yesterday with my 30-28 and 215' right on 3100fps at 475 yards.
My 30 -28 is nothing special AG stock Factory 700 action, TT trigger at 1.25lbs, ADG brass
It does have the freebore for the 215's
This was off a bipod also.

who's reamer did you use for your 30/28? Do you feel it was the best or would you change it any.. ?? I have a 28 I might rebarrel to 30/28

I suggest it, if you have a bushing die its a simple convert and you have some 28 brass its an easy neck up. You will get donuts so they need to be reamed out after 2nd or 3rd firing or if you stay above neck shoulder a bit not a problem I ream mine out though if nothing else just in case.
If you have Nosler brass it will last longer in a 30-28 also in that 3080- 3100 range than a straight 30 nosler but if your gonna buy brass get ADG.

Nice, I appreciate the info.. I will get with you and talk about that reamer when I get closer...
I have ADG and Nosler brass.. Might be a fun adventure.

So the fun thing about doing the 33 would be you could shoot some heavies if you wanted, and then just for fun get some Hammers and let it scream with a light weight bullet.. I have ordered some hammer hunters and I am going to see how fast I can get those rockets going.

I liked my 33 but it was not much more than my 338 win mag. Like a 338 win +P. If you build it I would not exceed 24 in barrel…if I were you I'd build it with a 20-22 in barrel…and make it compact—also 225 lazerheads, 250 bulldozer, 230 led-x—work best in the 33. Also put a long magazine box in your 33 long action..I ran most of my overall lengths at around 3.55….28 nosler is a stomper with 180s and 195s…don't own one but would make a fine long range rig…
