My Berger 1st edition manual doesn't show the 170. Only the lighter bullets. My buddy shoots it with Retumbo. Starting around 62 grains working up in .5 grain increases. He settled in around 67 grains for his best accuracy and velocity was 3055(26"bbl). Hope that helps. His OAL in the lands in 3.130. He loads at .010 off so OAL is 3.120.

My Berger manual didn't have it either. Thank you! Gives me a good place to start.

Spoke to my buddy again and he also had great luck with RL26 and H1000 also. Didn't get any data but if you need additional data from these powders, I can accomodate you.

Here is what Berger sent me before they were bought out.

That definitely helps, thank you! I called Berger yesterday and they haven't called back yet.

Great place to start and alot of powder options also. Berger is very conservative in there loads. Also the OAL is Saami spec for the .270. You'll be much longer than that OAL listed on Berger's load sheet.

JTB, just finished a phone conversation with a gunsmith on a new barrel for my .270 Wby going to 1:8. After reading your thread looks like it does quite well. Was wondering if the 1:8 would work with the 150 VLD if I wanted another load besides the 170's. The 170 will be primary.
I have a 1:8 twist on mine and it shoots 140's, 150's everything very accurately. Never tried a 130 so not sure if that would come unwound but everything else is shooting great groups.

I would not consider these loads to be conservative. In fact start low I have a long throat for the 170 and never got to max load without pressure. 3050 fps is going to be about max. Be smart and use caution!

I would agree with sedan. 3050 with a 170 is moving out!! Watch for pressure signs and be safe. I'm using 67.3 grains of Retumbo and my velo is 2988 avg fps. That's fast enough and enough pressure for me. Super accurate 1/2 moa out to 900 yds so far so I don't mess with it. Good to go!
