Go hijack another thread.
I must of mis-understood your question. You are shooting Short Mags in a long action and I agreed with you that I was also shooting a long action...
No hijack...the OP was asking what the OP could do with a SA...sounds like a longer mag box and some throating is the way to go...
Not too privey on merged threads
10-4. What terminal ballistics have you encountered with the 170 at high velocities?
You could build a 270 SS that will reach close to 3100 with a 170 and do it at 2.925 coal. Reamer, dies, brass all available. 2.925" to lands with 170 Berger and 2.850" with 150 LRAB at 3152' with 21" barrel......Rich
That is such an angry little package. For a short barrel pack gun, a 170 at 3100 is unreal! Well done, Rich.
Well, it was JUST short of 3000 with a 21" so 3100 easily with a 26".
@285yrds...3225fps @ muzzle...170 Berger...270Wby
This is the opposite side wound of the entry on my Bull...
Kind of destructive...
The bullet puked its guts out...
Great info guys. I’m going to dig in to the Sherman a bit.
Regarding throating for the 170’s with standard magazine, how will affect seating depth/OAL if I want to shoot 130-140’s?
What modifications can be made to extend mag past 3.000? Any short actions a little longer than 3.000”? Maybe a medium action? I’d really like to stick with SA as this is a lightweight build.
The Tikka works great and has plenty of action length. I have a 7ss built on a Savage with a dbm which also works well. There are others that work with various mag combos as well.
Shooting the lighter bullets won't be a problem.
Looking at your pic, it appears that I could set back the lands another 0.100” and still have plenty of bullet left out of the case.
Agreed. Should be fine
