270 WSM 165gr VLD load help

F-Class rules answers:
  • no muzzle brakes allowed
  • complete rifle weight limit is around 18lbs
What works in F-Class open (in Canada)
In Canada at least, anything less an 284Win, 6.5x55 AI or a 7mm magnum (7WSM or a wildcat) simply can't win in F-Class Open. The 6mm BR and 6.5-284 are the best choice for ranges of up to 600 yards but a .550 BC bullet can't match a .650 BC bullet at 1000 yards.
Because of this and costs, many shooters are moving to F-TR where the playing field is more equal (only 223 Rem and 308 Win allowed).

You're probably right. But, just getting started and winning may be 2 different matters. I doubt many factory rifles win the big competitions.

i want to use the 175 matrix out of my wsm has any one tryd them. and i live in new zealand and to get them here is a bit of a mission. has any one tryd adi powder as the adi hand book states that 65 grains of ar2225 would push a 180 grain projectile at 2810 out of a 24inch barrel i have found that adi powders do tend to push projectiles at least as as fast as the book states currently im using 140 grain sst going 3250 with 73grains of adi 2217

I have tried them with Retumbo, H-1000, and H4831sc in the wsm.

Ar2225 is right in between Retumbo and Rl-25 on the burn rate chart. Guys have been getting good results with Retumbo and the 175's so Ar2225 should work fine.

I would recommend reducing these loads by 2-4 grains and work up.

65gr of Retumbo gave me 2,885 fps but i could go as high as 67.5 gr.

65gr of H1000 gave me 2,917 fps.

The H4831sc load is about 4 grains over book max, so i don't feel comfortable sharing, but it gave me the best accuracy and a velocity of 3,009 fps. It is right at max in my rifle. You can check Hodgdon's website for a good place to start.

Norma Cases. Fed 215 Match Magnum Primers. 175 Matrix. .020" off the lands on all loads. Barrel is new so as it breaks in it will pick up speed. Guys with 10 twist barrels are running a little faster than mine. Barrel is a 9 twist 5R Benchmark 27". Reamer is a .310 neck with .180" freebore.

cheers mate year i load out past my book i load out to 73grains with adi powders and my 140s sst im gonna have to try and get sum of these matrix projectiles but its very hard to import these into new zealand
