270 winchester and 140 berger hunting bullets

new to reloading and need some pet loads for 140g berger bullets in a 270 winchester.

I'll double check when I get home tonight to get you the exact specs but I believe the following will be true:

60.2 gr of H4831sc
COAL 3.245
recorded muzzle velo of 3005-3030 w/ 24" barrel

I've shot this load out to 1090 yards on a metal plate with great accuracy. Deer, antelope, and prarie dogs haven't liked it too much either.

Like I said, I'll double check that tonight and edit the post if incorrect.

I shoot the 150's, but my rifle also likes H4831SC the best, also tried RL 19, IMR7828SSC & IMR 4350. I use F215M primers.

3,000fps should be fairly easy to get. My 150's are at 3k fps.

Also I tried the "Jump Test" for seating depths. I tried .010", .050", .090" and .130" (these are all distances from lands, on my hunting rifle I didn't seat any into the lands). My stock Rem700 preferred the .050" jump the best. You may be limited by mag length on this. But I think it's worth testing, the different depths produced largely varied accuracy and SD's.

My rifle also prefers the .302" bushing for neck tension(Win brass, unturned necks).

I started out with the 130gr VLD's but didn't have enough neck to seat them close to the lands, so I bought some 150's and haven't bought another bullet since then.

The Berger's are very accurate and have proved devastating on deer.

Stalker I am also shooting a 700. What is your powder grain and oal on the 150's.

I found that the IMR4350 at 42-43gr worked great with the 140's and RL 22 at 60-60.5 worked best with the 130's. And both of mine are loaded well off the lands and shoot .25" or better.

Just picked up a .270 two days ago and shot it for the first time yesterday. I literally went to my " go to" manual and picked out two loads using two powders and two bullets. I chose 140 Berger VLD's and Barnes 130 TTSX bullets. Well, the gun,( Browning A- Bolt) didn't like the TTSX as well as the Bergers. Long story short. 54.0 -RL19-140 VLD using fresh Federal 210 primers yielded .3 groups at 100, and groups in the .7 range at 200. Now I am not a fluent .270 man, I have always favored the sevens and thirties through the years, but this gun , load combo works. I have not chronographed it yet, but will soon. I beleive my COAL was around 3.336 plus or minus. It seemed to be fast,as I was seeing impact at 200 PDQ when I was shooting at that distance. I have not had that much experience with a .270 in the past, but it is enlightening to have one that shoots without a whole lot of fuss. Hope

Thanks guys.....as it looks I can no longer get 140 gr.....so I have switched to 270 win 130 grain berger.....I hate to ask but here goes.....is there a pet load to start out with......I have IMR 4895....IMR 4350 & Benchmark.

Why can you no longer buy 140 gr VLDs? I bought some last week from Powder Valley.
