264 win mag vs 6.5x300 weatherby

Yea they use the same bolt face .532" magnum bolt face. What is your reason to go from 264 to 6.5-300wby?

Both cartridges go back to the 375 H&H, so same bolt face.
From what I've read about the 6.5x300, and experienced first hand with the 264, the Weatherby is about 200 fps or so faster using their factory ammo than I can reload in the 264.
Weatherby gets 3400 FPS out of their factory loads with a 140 gr. pill, with 3030ft pounds of muzzle energy with that load.
I can get 3200 fps safely, but that's as fast as I'm shooting my baby.
I did some quick research and it looks like they get about $60.00 a box for those, and historically, it's been hard to squeeze more performance out of Weatherby by reloading.
Money was always the hold back for me owning Weatherby.
Not that I can't afford the rifles. I can't afford to shoot them like I like to shoot.
If you can, I say go for it.

Folks just THINK the .264WM is a barrel burner... Get a 6.5-300 Wby and see how long that one lasts... About the same as a .26 Nosler, which is roughly 500-600 rounds.

My buddy just got the 6.5- 300 he's not very happy with it. Not many options in bullets. As he put it, has the bark of a great Dane but the bite of a poodle. Alot of wasted energy in the chamber set up.
If you reload, .264 with slower burning powder works great with good barrel life for a hunter. Gets the bad rep of a barrel burner from competition shooters and from the early 60's when the powders were faster burning.

I have a 264 Win Mag built on a Howa action with a Shilen 26" match barrel. I have shot all types of game here in NZ with this rifle using 140 Grain SST bullets from Hornady. I have about 350 rounds down and it is still a half MOA gun.
I have tried the Hornady 120 gr GMX and 90 GR peer TNT and they are dynamite and flatter than a 22-250. These bullets have shot fallow deer at 3490 fps and 3600 fps respectively.
My 140 Gr SST load does 3003 fps and is backed off on purpose to prolong barrel life. I can get 3100 fps with H1000 / AR2217 and have a buddy who is using RL33 with 77-80 grs to achieve 3300 fps with the same 140 gr bullets.
This is roughly 26 Nos / 6.5 H&H / 6.5 WW / 6.5 STW Mag performance. The deer don't notice the 100 fps difference, and if you go too fast your bullets might fail (monolithic won't).
All that said, if you only shoot factory ammunition then a 6.5-300 WW will give you another 2-300 FPS.

A 264 win mag is a barre burner but it's more efficient than a 6.5-300wby you gain 100fps for what 20gr more powder? A properly throated 264wm will do 3250-3300 with a 140gr bullet and the right powder

Exactly like the difference in the .28 Nosler/7mm STW versus the 7mm RUM. The RUM only gains you about 25-50 FPS (real world) at the cost of about 20 grains more powder, and about half the throat life.
Different bolt face, but the 6.5 Sherman will run close with them. 140 Berger just over 3300 fps. Does this with way less powder than the 264WM or Weatherby. I've got a 28" barrel, but others on here have gotten 3300 fps out of 26" barrels.

I think that may be like an MSRP thing. It's about $60.00 for the faster A frame 140 gr and $34.00 for the slower 140 gr.
Those prices do not include shipping, and I used ammoseek to find them.
I've had at least one 264 win in the safe since 1995. Now I have four. They just plain work. I'm having another built currently to take full advantage of the 150-160g bullets. 264 Win is a fine cartridge, it has the advantage of a long history and Walmart available ammo that is capable of taking nearly anything in North America, within reason. As far as a long range hunter, it is my favorite chambering. 1,000 yards and in is certainly within reason. It is about as much powder as you can practically burn with a 0.264" bullet. There are other '26's' with more horsepower but the returns are really negligible for the amount of powder burnt, and barrel, and they aren't as easy to tame as the 264 Win. I don't see any practical reason for a 6.5-300, but if you dig it by ALL means run what what you like.
Not to muddy the water further but have you thought about something else? I would take a long look at a 6.5 Sherman as well. It runs on a standard 0.473 bolt face long action. They are efficient, don't run a belted case and run pretty well neck and neck with what a 264 Win is safely capable of, with better barrel life.

I have a 264 in a Ruger Hawkeye 1:8 twist all factory. I shoot the 143 eld-x bullets 5 shot group 5/8 inch at 100 an have killed mature bucks out too 400 an consistently hit 8 inch plate at 500. I love the 264 an recoil is mild
