I’ve got a donor action from a 300 weatherby I’m wanting to build a rifle on. I’m thinking I may want something in 25 caliber and have been looking at the 25 PRC or 25-284. I would probably run 127 grain hammers or 131 grain blackjacks. Is my weatherby action too much action for this chambering? I’m not opposed to buying another action. Are there any other quarter bore hot rods I should be considering? Oh, I’ll mainly be using this rifle on Texas deer and varmints. Might try it on antelope if I ever draw a tag.

25 PRC or 25-284 would be nice. There's also the 25 SST from Sherman wildcats. Either one of those three would be a nice hot rod.

The only issue with a new .257, is right now, yet again, there is only a single heavy high BC .257 bullet available. The 135 Berger LR Hyb.

Still no word on the Berger 133 Elite Hunter release.

The 131 Blackjack has been on backorder since end of 2020. I have 2k that have been paid for since Dec, and still no word. No response to emails either.

You can get all the Hammer bullets you want in a few days the 117 gr absolute at 3600 plus feet per second with a 1-7 twist 257 wby mag would be a laser

True! My .257 WBTY was primarily built for the 133s. Meantime, I will be using the high BC Cayugas, Badlands, and 131s that a very dear friend gave me to try.

I have a great 121 Hammer Hunter load for my 25SST at 3414fps.
I couldn't get the 110 Super Bulldozer to shoot acceptably in it. Probably would have been fine for shots 500 and in though.
I have not tried the Cayuga.

But at $1+/ea, they are nearly 2/3x the cost of Berger or Blackjack. When you shoot a lot, that adds up quickly. For a hunting rifle, no big deal. But for a double duty steel/hunter, that can be a deciding factor.

Plus, BCs are somewhat/substantially lower.
131 BJ Ace G7 .333
135 LR Hyb G7 .334
133 Elite G7 .315 (advertized)
115 VLD G7 .247
121 HH G7 .238
128 HH G7 .244
117 Cayuga G7 .282
110 SB G7 .292

Now, a .257 Wby build does not sound like a dual purpose build.

But there are people who do not like mono bullets.

For me? Monos work great for moderate distance shots on game. But stretching it out, I want a high BC cup/core bullet. For wind as much as impact velocity.

This is my 1st try with monos. They will be strictly for hunting as I have other set-ups for target shooting. I agree with your take on high BC cup/core for LRH.
