240 gibbs

Tooth,
I'm not sure where I saw it, but gun writer Wayne Van Zoll wrote an article some years ago with some load data for the 240 Gibbs. I'll see if I can find it if you're interested.
definitely interested. thanks for the offer!

I find my memory fails again. LOL
The article from Wayne that I was referring to was on the 240 Hawk, a similar round to the Gibbs, made from 30-06 brass necked down with the shoulder angle changed. The article was in the 2003 Deer and Big Game rifles. He achieved some impressive velocities, I think his rifle had a 28" barrel done by Charlie Sisk.
Sorry for the confusion,
Gary

Article by Wayne van Zwoll:

https://gunsmagazine.com/guns/rifles/hunting-with-gibbs/

Enjoy!

:)

Velocity numbers are very close to what I'm getting in a 26" 6mm Rem. The 240 Gibbs data shows 150 fps faster with the 55 grains and equal for the 70 grainers.

The Hawk cartridges were somewhat successful due to the fact that they used the .30-06 cases which at the time everyone had access to.

Rifleman the world over have seen articles about Hawk Cartridges, Z-Hat Custom Inc., and Fred Zeglin. Fred has gathered years of pressure testing and shooting into a manual format that makes it easy for any reloader to form and fire Hawk Cartridge. Many years have passed since Dave Scovill of Wolfe Publishing wrote about the 375 Hawk/Scovill and Fred Zeglin introduced the rest of the Hawk line of wildcats through his company Z-Hat Custom. These cartridges were featured in later Wayne van Zwoll articles in several publications. They have also appeared in books, including the popular "Cartridges of the World" by Frank Barnes. Hawk Cartridges have proven to have staying power; that is the best test of a successful wildcat cartridge. This collection of data includes some new material and new cartridges in the Hawk line-up. The intention is to provide information that time has shown to be valuable to shooters of Hawk Cartridges. There is no other resource for Hawk Cartridges that meets the needs of Wildcatters, Reloaders, and Shooters everywhere.

There are 11 Hawk wildcat improved cartridges in calibers: 6mm, .257, 6.5mm, .270, 7mm, .308, 8mm, .338, .358, .375, and even the .411- all based on an improved .30-06 case.

:)

And don't forget another favorite of mine, the .240 Weatherby Magnum!

;)
