230 Gr Berger Load Data For 300RUM wanted.

I shot up to 86gr H1000 with the 230 OTM. I got faint ejector markes there. I'm going to load up some more with 86gr. My 3 shot group was right at 1/2MOA at 300. Ill play with seating depth a little bit and see what it can do. My chrono didn't like the sun, it was realy early, so I dind't get any good velocities.

I know this post is getting old but I have not seen much about the 230's . They are my new favorite rum bullet with 81.5gr of H1000 and rem 9 1/2 primers 3.7 coal. Average speed is 3040fps and accuracy with the otm's was .218 the hybrid target's with same load average group was .380. Has anybody else had good luck with them?

After extensive load testing with the 230 hybrid target in my 27" Rum, 87.5 grains of H1000 produces 2980 with around 13ES and 7SD. 88 grains of Retumbo produced 2950 with high ES. These are both hot loads but at roughly the same chamber pressures, the H1000 is superior in this rifle. Unfortunately the 230's won't shoot under 1 MOA consistently in my rifle. My theory is that my 1in10 is not quite enough to fully stabilize at this velocity at sea level, at least that is my gunsmith's opinion. I realize Berger says 1in10 is ok. The 215 hybrids are in the mail, I'll see if they work better. Velocity at distance will be better with the 215's and they will be real close energy wise to the 230's.

Tumbleweed, we just started working up loads with 230 OTM hybrid in one of my old accumarks I sold to a friend. We found the accuracy node to be right at 94 gr of H-1000 in a factory 30-378 Wby which is about 2880 fps. This was at 1300 ft. alt. The rifle, even with Wby freebore, shot 1/2 moa right off the batt. This is a 26" 1 in 10 twist. My point is you may want to drop back a bit on the charge and see if it helps.

Thanks for the response Jeff, I always appreciate your input. I have thought of this too and suspect I may be pushing things too hard to acheive the accuracy I require. I felt for the 230 to be a real advantage (worth switching to) over my 210VLD at 3120fps I would need to have it run at least 2950 and apparently that's just too much to ask for in my rifle with sub .5MOA accuracy. I am looking forward to the 215 hybrids arriving any day and seeing if they like to shoot in the 3100fps range.:D

My son is running the 230 @ 2775 fps from his 300 win. For a comparison he use to run his 210's at 2916 fps from the same rifle. Comparing these two loads they are almost the same velocity at 1000 yards, but the 230 carries about 130 lbs more energy and it has shown us it's true ability to buck the wind very well.

Just thought I woul toss this out there for reference.

Jeff, here's the numbers I've been looking at: Numbers are at sea level, 100 yard zero, 10mph wind and at a distance of 1000 yards.

210VLD@3120fps: 229"drop, 1788fps, 1491ft/lbs. and 5.2MOA wind drift.

215 Hybrid Target@3100fps: 222"drop, 1880fps, 1687ft/lbs. and 4.7MOA wind drift.

230 Hybrid Target@2925fps: 242"drop, 1811fps, 1675ft/lbs. and 4.7MOA wind drift.

As you can see, if I get down there around 2900fps with the 230 in order to get it to shoot accurately I will be better off going with the 215 provided it shoots and runs right around 3100fps (I don't see why it wouldn't). Wind drift for the 215 and the 230's at these velocities are the same, only .5MOA better than the 210VLD. Now whether the 215 will run in the neighborhood of 3100 and be very accurate we shall have to see.

I ended up going with the 215 and was able to run 3160 fps. Accuracy was about half minute until I reached an abrupt end to the barrels life at about 1300 rounds. It's going in for major surgery in the next couple weeks. It will stay a rum but will wear a 31" broughton and use the 230's this time around.
