Anyone have a load for the 230 Hybrid Bergers for a 300 RUM? I have been wanting to try them and have heard excellent things from them. Any info you are wiling to share would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

I recently loaded some of the 230 Targets up and out of 27" here was my results:

87.5 gr. H1000, NC brass,Fed215GM,COAL 3.837" just touching rifling= 2980fps, ES13, SD 7.

88.0 gr. Retumbo, NC brass,Fed215GM,COAL 3.837" just touching rifling=2940fps, high ES.

I needed to run these at around 2950 to be a real advantage over my 210VLD load but unfortunately the pressures were a little high and could not acheive the accuracy I require with these loads or even slower loads, this may have something to do with barrel twist as well but not sure. They were hot in my rifle but not in any danger zones. Also, the H1000 yielded more velocity at roughly the same pressures. Carefully work up starting several grains lower than what I have listed. You might take a serious look at the 215 targets, that's what I'm working up right now and pleasantly surprised to be getting around 3150fps at the same pressure levels that I have running the 210VLD at 3120fps. Very initial accuracy tests show that I probably wont have much trouble getting these under .5MOA either. Run the ballistics between the 215 at 3150fps and the 230 Target at 2980fps and the 215 wins in the velocity and energy category even at 1200 yards.

Thank you very much. I shoot Barnes out of all my ultras now and have had awesome results. My 7 RUM is at .25 moa at 300 and my 338 ultra is the same. The 7mm is running the 150 ttsx and the 338 is running the 265 ttsx. I wanted to try something new so I thought the Bergers would be a good challenge.

Thanks again for the advise.

I used to run Barnes TSX bullets as well, great bullets and super accurate. However, if you're like me, you'll be tickled pink with the Berger's long range performance on game.:D

Tumbleweed what can you tell us about about the 210 vs 230 in the energy department at lets say 1000 yds. i am awaiting to get my 300rum back and have bought 230 target hybrids as a starting point for longrange hunting. just cant figure out why you get 30fps more velocity out of a 215 than you did on your 210. then you lost 170fps between the 230 to 215grain. i have done alot of looking around concerning the load development with the 230 and there high b.c. but nothing i have read tells me to shoot the 210 215 over the 230. i keep getting more and more confused. any and all help greatly appreciated.

Let me know when you have the data for the 215's. I like the sounds of the long range performance. :D I shot a elk this year with the 338 ultra and dropped it dead as a stone with the 265 ttsx.

It would be fun to do the same with the 300 ultra this year.

Kyle, sorry if I caused you any confusion. Let me explain my thoughts a little better. On your first question, yes the 230 Target has quite a bit more energy at the 1K mark than the 210, velocity is very close. Here are those numbers at 1K for you to compare, this is a 100 yard zero and at sea level with a 10mph wind: I reduced the velocity on the 230 to a more reasonable number that one should be able to acheive very good accuracy out of a RUM.

210VLD@3120fps: 1771fps, 1463ft/lbs, 230.8"drop, 55.7"wind drift.

230 Hybrid Target@2900fps: 1777fps, 1613ft/lbs, 253.6"drop, 50.8"wind drift.

For me, the 210 VLD shoots so well that I would have needed to get equivalent or better accuracy from the 230 at or above 2900fps before I would switch. However, I could not get the level of accuracy I needed.
Now, on your second question: My theory is that the hybrid nose design may enter the rifling smoother and allow for a little better velocity than a VLD of the same weight. To answer your question about the 215 vs. the 230. I have discovered that in my rifle a 10 grain bullet change will typically create a 100fps velocity change when loaded to roughly the same pressures. As I mentioned above, I am currently working on load development with the 215's and here's why, I think you'll like these numbers: Once again these are at 1K.

230 Hybrid Target@2900fps: 1777fps, 1613ft/lbs, 253.6"drop, 50.8" wind drift.

215 Hybrid Target@3150fps: 1902fps, 1728ft/lbs, 215.3"drop, 48.3" wind drift.

You may or may not get these kind of velocity numbers out of your rifle, there's only one way to find out. But for me, the 215 is hands down the one to go with, this will still be a legitimate elk load to 1200 yards. I hope to be able to do a little more load development this weekend.:D

whatever you find out keep us informed. i have 230 hybrids and i will pick up some 215's to play with. im a month out till rifle is back to me as of yet. still got breaking in to do and what not when i get it. got a little h1000 and retumbo to play with. only time will tell. im all ears when i here about the 300rum and hybrids

was kinda hoping Broz would chime in with his knowledge. i know he runs the 230 otm with much success and wonder if he has compared or tried them up against the 230 hybrids as of yet.

I stayed off this thread since I have not shot them in a RUM. We have shot the 230 OTM Hybrids in my sons 300 win. The rifle has always prior been shot with 210 Hunting VLD's. Here are some interesting umbers.

Same rifle and both loads safe but close to max.

210 VLD @ 2916 muzzle velocity

230 OTM Hybrid @ 2775 Muzzle velocity

At 1000 yards the 230 has caught the 210 in velocity but the 230 carries 130 lbs more energy.

The 230's are awesome in the wind bucking dept. and have done a superb job on game, elk x2 , deer at almost 900 yards, antelope at 335, 590 and 738. all one shot hits and no tracking.

I have just recently been talking a fried through development with the 230's in an acumark 30-378 I sold him. This rifle with has been sending 210 VLD's for years and has taken tons of game, Litterly. The rifle has been given the name "Bang Flop" for a reason. That is it in my signature with the bull.

Initial tseting shows great accuracy with the 230's in the 30-378 and very respectable velocities in the 2950 fps range with a very safe load of H-1000.

It sees in this big case the 230's are a good fit and maybe more efficent than a 210 bullet as far as velocity. Couple that with the 230's BC of .711 and it is to be admired in any hunting situation especially long range. I would expect similar results from a 300 Rum and also a little longer throat life with the 230's.

also all testing we have done has been with 1 in 10 twist tubes.

the 230's i have in my hand say .743bc..
i bought a brand new 300rum sendero with 1-10 twist with the intentions of shooting the 230g target hybrids. i am still waiting for some work to be done, but i am gathering all the little crap. the only thing i haven't decided is which powder should i start load development with h1000 or retumbo. reason i ask is im gonna buy a 8lb jug so i don't have powder variences.

The ones we have shot in the 300 win are of the frst ones released. They read 230 OTM Tactical Hybrids and state .711 BC on the box. You must have some VLD's?? Bergers webite is down right now and I cant get on.

I have gotten away from Retumbo from some bad xperiences I had with it spiking with max loads in hot chambers or hot days. I would use H-1000. I am with you on the 8 lb jug. My last order of H-1000 was for 5 eight lb jugs all same lot. :D

Those are Hybrid Targets. I have not shot them so I can not contest to their performance on game. What we are shooting is the 230 OTM Tactical Hybrids.
