I took my first elk in Unitas Mountains in Utah in 2016. Super awesome bull that scored 348. I shot him the first day, 2 hours into the hunt., just over 100 yards away. Rewarding for certain. But I was anticipating a long hunt, full of adventure.

My next elk hunt, just a few weeks ago, was a backcountry horseback hunt in the Washakie Wilderness outside Cody, Wyoming. This hunt proved fulfilling in every way possible, to include punching my tag. The journey through the mountains was just incredible and arduous. While the bull I tagged was a 6x6 and only 260", the hunt itself was my idea of epic. I made the longest shot I've taken on an animal. 1 shot at 440 yards with my 270WSM and a 150 gr ABLR. I have been practicing out to 800 for the last year, so I was prepared. However, when I squeezed that trigger and watched him drop in my scope, it was somewhat cathartic.

I did this hunt with two other girlfriends, and we all tagged out. So many amazing memories made and stories to share with each other for years to come.

Here are a few photos I took while on the mountain. I hope to do this again one day, before my knees decide otherwise. Happy Hunting! V

Big congrats! I'm also secretly jealous. I've logged over 200 skydives, taught SCUBA for 15 years and made spearfishing dives in the 200' range quite a bit but riding a horse scares the bejezzus out of me. When they make a horse like a motorcycle with a throttle and brakes I'm in. Until then I'll live vicariously through you and all the other back country hunters.

That's what living is all about.
I would love to do a hunt like that.
